I N , 33.4 ns nm 3,1 F-RCM HERE TO THERE The real difference between men is energy. A strong will, a settled purpose, an invincible determination can accomplish almost anything: in this lies the distinction between great men .and little men. ...... Fuller Many individuals have graduated from East High School since its first class received diplomas in the year 187 5. Success and greatness have been the reward of a sizeable ntunber of our alturmi which includes Governor John Reynolds, Congressman John Byrnes, Austin Strauble, Curly Lambeau, Chief Justice Joseph Martin, Red Smith, Susan Davies, and Peter Evans. These men and women all have shown the qualities expressed by the above quotation and are, indeed, a credit to their alma mater. We know not how many future graduates of our school will be on the list ofthe greats, for we are reading only the first verse of the first chapter of a book whose pages are infinite. But we do know that many more of our graduates will distinguish themselves in all walks of life. For boundless energy, strong wills, settled purposes, and an invincible determination are not unknown qualities at East High School. 2

mhz ,Slade of wisconsin REP. JOHN W. BYRNES wig:-:gg-g-M ITN DIHTRICY. WBCGMIIN nur eb.-mn HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES ' 5'JL'L wasnmsron zs. oc ,,L15'g-,-'gm s-.mu My memory of high school days is of a glorious time of life when the days were filled with wonderful things: The constant challenge to learn new skills and acquire new knowledge, The thrilling discovery of age-old truths about the world and universe in which we live, The warmth of friendships formed and strengthened at a time when companionship means so much, and The spine-tingling sensation of feeling, for the first time, that we are part of something bigger and nobler than any one of us. I hope this book, as yeerbooks once did me, will remind you of all of these things and encourage you to live deeply and enjoy fully the wonderful years of your life now unfolding before you. A Eg ' . EXECUTIVE OFFICE MADISUN 2 January 31, 1963 ' 1 JOHN W, REYNOLDS To the 1963 Graduating Class of East High School I am nleased to have a chance to convey this message to all of you at East High School. As an alumnus of East High, I feel a snecial warmth toward both the students and faculty. But my message to you applies to all Wisconsin's youth as well as to you at East Hiph. Today our state and our nation need the help and ihe attention of young neonle. Government and nolitics are becoming more important as America continues to provide leadership for the free world. Yet our citizens, and especially our high school and college students, are not fully aware of the great needs and opportunities in the field of government and politics. The understanding of complex public issues and the finding of solutions to government problems are great challenges to your generation Your participation in government is needed at the local, state and national levelsg you can make a great contri- bution if you will devote your attention to public problems. As the first East High alumnus to serve as Governor of Visconsin, I especially want to tell those of you at East High that you have a great challenge and a heavy responsibility in public life. I hope that many of you will take part in government. If you are in Madison during my term of office, I hone you will stop in to see me and to gain a greater understanding of your government and the role that awaits you in our nublic life. Sincerely vours, X JOHN W. REY DS G o v e r n o r
