A strong will, a settled purpose, an invincible determination can accomplish almost anything: in this lies the distinction between great men .and little men. ...... Fuller Many individuals have graduated from East High School since its first class received diplomas in the year 187 5. Success and greatness have been the reward of a sizeable ntunber of our alturmi which includes Governor John Reynolds, Congressman John Byrnes, Austin Strauble, Curly Lambeau, Chief Justice Joseph Martin, Red Smith, Susan Davies, and Peter Evans. These men and women all have shown the qualities expressed by the above quotation and are, indeed, a credit to their alma mater. We know not how many future graduates of our school will be on the list ofthe greats, for we are reading only the first verse of the first chapter of a book whose pages are infinite. But we do know that many more of our graduates will distinguish themselves in all walks of life. For boundless energy, strong wills, settled purposes, and an invincible determination are not unknown qualities at East High School. 2 mhz ,Slade of wisconsin REP. JOHN W. WBCGMIIN nur eb.-mn HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES ' 5'JL'L wasnmsron zs. oc ,,L15'g-,-'gm s-.mu My memory of high school days is of a glorious time of life when the days were filled with wonderful things: The constant challenge to learn new skills and acquire new knowledge, The thrilling discovery of age-old truths about the world and universe in which we live, The warmth of friendships formed and strengthened at a time when companionship means so much, and The spine-tingling sensation of feeling, for the first time, that we are part of something bigger and nobler than any one of us. I hope this book, as yeerbooks once did me, will remind you of all of these things and encourage you to live deeply and enjoy fully the wonderful years of your life now unfolding before you. A Eg ' . EXECUTIVE OFFICE MADISUN 2 January 31, 1963 ' 1 JOHN W, REYNOLDS To the 1963 Graduating Class of East High School I am nleased to have a chance to convey this message to all of you at East High School. As an alumnus of East High, I feel a snecial warmth toward both the students and faculty. But my message to you applies to all Wisconsin's youth as well as to you at East Hiph. Today our state and our nation need the help and ihe attention of young neonle. Government and nolitics are becoming more important as America continues to provide leadership for the free world. Yet our citizens, and especially our high school and college students, are not fully aware of the great needs and opportunities in the field of government and politics. The understanding of complex public issues and the finding of solutions to government problems are great challenges to your generation Your participation in government is needed at the local, state and national levelsg you can make a great contri- bution if you will devote your attention to public problems. As the first East High alumnus to serve as Governor of Visconsin, I especially want to tell those of you at East High that you have a great challenge and a heavy responsibility in public life. I hope that many of you will take part in government. If you are in Madison during my term of office, I hone you will stop in to see me and to gain a greater understanding of your government and the role that awaits you in our nublic life. Consider the gift of devotion - - - that which makes life worthwhile. Devotion may be measured not in dollars, nor in drachmas, nor in pesos. It is not a provincial unit, but rather a universal attribute instilled in the heartg consequently, it must be measured in terms of understanding, sympathy, guidance, justice, faith, con- cern - - - in the very heartbeat of human understanding. Mr. Francis Sundberg, our vice-principal, measures high in these terms. His is a life rising above the high stacks of excuses, the piles of re-admit permits, the hourly grievances, the ever-ringing telephone. His is a life of the office door open to every student in our school. His activities range from bestowing ever-thought- ful compliments, to meeting ever- judicious discipline. One may do his job without becoming particularly involved with life and enjoy a superficial kind of liv- ing, but what meaning has this kind of existence to the devoted? The devoted are those who desire that every day be filled with activities of dedicated service to ideals, for it is in such service that they, themselves, come to full measure as man. ' We, the staff of EAST ECHOES, have no roses to cover thorns - - - no ointments to heal wonds - - - no shields to protect the spirit, but we do have honor to bestow on you, Mr, Sundberg, come to full measure as an edu- cated man. May the student body rededicate itself to be of service to you as you are to them. In the future, many of you will be- come interested in acquiring a greater understanding of inanimate objects while others will desire to increase their understanding of people. Specialists in these two fields are termed scientists and humanists. In our modern society or culture, no one should delve into the mysteries of one area to the extent of paying only passing attention to the other. Rather, one should strive for a proportion in each, a breadth of knowledge which will enable him to appreciate the interrelationships of the numerous parts which constitute the whole of life and living. ' We earn a living by making use of acquired special skills. Life, however, can be much more than earning a livlihood, important as this is to all, A life devoted solely to amassing a fortune or only to securing public acclaim invariably is accompanied by loneliness and frustration. On the other hand, those who combine or blend an appreciation of nature, an understanding and respect for the wisdom we have inherited from those who have gone before us, and a sincere desire to render a service to others with their daily labor will find constant pleasure and personal satisfaction, regardless of the vocation they have selected. We hope your years at East are but a beginning to the acquisition of that degree of breadth and depth of knowledge which will make each of your individual lives of benefit to others, while bringing great satisfaction to you. ANTONE ERDMANN We, the class of '63, express our sincere appreciation to a retiring faculty member, Mr. Antone Erdmann. For the deep, personal interest that Mr. Erdmann has shown to each student, as well as for his concern in the improvement of our school, we are grateful. An alumnus of West High School 119173, Mr. Erdmann attended Valparaiso University. He received a Bachelor of Science degree from St. Norbert College. Then for a ten year period he taught in a South Dakota school sys- tern. Mr. Erdmann has been at East for almost two decades, during which time he has selilessly devoted his talents in order that we might gain a greater understanding and an appreciation of the world of nature and the glorious out-of-doors. He has gone beyond the call of duty in the varied services he has rendered to East. As an educator he has made himself esteemed for his fairness in judgements, and he is widely respected for his wise council and moral teachings. For all of this, we thank Mr. Erdmann. ln offering this appreciation and gratitude, we speak also for an in- debted alumni, who, with us, desire to extend to Mr. Erdmann our best wishes for a long and happy retirement. SH , - e' Seniors Cheryl Jones and Karen Grunwald study while Lorraine Drze- wiecki is deep in thought. Strong, spirited, and responsible- these words well describe this year's set of seniors. Realizing fully the obligations which the graduating class must assume, they bent their efforts to the tasks at hand. They knew that their best was the least that could be offered to the school that has given them so much. In reviewing their past years at East, they appreciate their accom- plishments, but also appreciate that all is not done-that there is still a great challenge to be met. On graduation night, the audi- ence of proud parents knew that their sons or daughters had satisfactorily finished one milestone of their careers. But the future courses of these young adults must be carefully charted, lest by rash choosing, ultimate success is denied them Three wonderful years at East High will live for all time in the memories of these graduating seniors Thus, they now stand poised on the summit of their youth, the past behind, the future beckoning. They are ready to travel ahead to create new opportunities, or make the most of what advantages our great Republic, under God, has to offerg by hard work and desire they shall succeed. Once timid and unsure sophomores, as upperclassmen they assumed qualities of self-reliance and confidence. They entered quickly into the year 's work, knowing procedures, and proceeding with diligence. Many joined new clubs: some reaffiliated with those they had been a part of during the previous term. Constantly seeking to learn more of the workings of organizations, they prepared themselves for their senior year when they will have full responsibility. Never have they lost sight of their real purpose at East-that being, to gain knowledge and prepare themselves for their life 's work. Beth Abrohams Doreen Adamany Dennis Adams K r . The usually slow acceptance of this set by the upperclassmen was never apparent. The sophomores' desire to participate actively in school affairs resulted in their quickly becoming an integral part of life at East. These energetic young people showed a hunger for knowledge and an eagerness to help. Pep assemblies were rousing affairs because of their zeal. Yes, the sophomore class seemed to have an appreciation of the rich heritage which is East. Inspired by the successful season of '61, coupled with the knowledge that eleven letterman would be returning for '62, East High was anticipating another successful year in football. 1 . The first games played gave us reason to believe that this anticipation was not without basis. East rolled over Abbot Pennings, Sheboygan North, and Fond du Lac. Among top-notch performers were Dave Teske, Bob Manger, John O'Connell, Dave Valentine, and Jim St. Thomas. But Dame Fortune stepped in and plagued the Devils with injuries which re- sulted in key-player losses. The depth wasn 't sufficient to carry through to more wins. The final tabulation revealed a 3-4-l record--the tie, with Manitowoc, the defeats were handed out by Oshkosh, Sheboygan South, Appleton, and Green Bay West. The loss column was never top heavyg however, a very slim winning margin for our opponents was all that East would allow. The final seconds might have spelled victory as the finish was always close. The games played this year were a tribute to the magnificent coaching of Head Coach Mancheski, and his assistants, Mr. Rienke and Mr. Bray. Outstanding per- formances were turned in by the team. Loyally, the boys spent long hours after school at practice, developing new plays and putting finishing touches on the old. Dave Tegke and Dale Morgan The team was a dedicated lot, which won the respect and admiration of the stu- dent body for a job well done. LV. Football SEATED: R. Gierczack, G. Stordeur, J. A MAN'S MAN ln the battle of life it is not the critic who countsg not the man who points out how the strong man stumbled, or where the doer of a deed could have done better. The credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arenag whose face is marred by dust, sweat and bloodg who strives valiantly, who errs and comes short again and again because there is no effort without error and shortcomingg who does act- ually strive to do the deedsg who knows the great enthusiasm, the great devotions, spends himself in a worthy cause: who as the best, knows in the end of triumph, of high achievement: and who at the worst, if he fails, at least fails while daring great- ly, so that his Place shall never be with these timid and cold souls who have never tasted eith- er victory or defeat. Well, that unusual circum- stance took place in the underclass play, Time Out for Ginger, Ginger Uanet Krieserl wanted to be a football player: however, she discovered later that being a girl has its advantages. The actors and audiance alike will never forget when bank president Uohn Morin, exclaimed, But she 's a boy, not a girl! to Ginger's dad. All-in-all, the whole play was a time out for laughter. The band, orchestra, and chorus are full of talented youth, many of whom will continue on to a full career in music. Other participants who have traveled this musical side road of school life will be rewarded with an appreciation of this fine art which will be a joy to them for all time. The 1962-63 season of the Music Department has been outstanding. Under the able leadership of Mr. Hinkely the band has appeared at all of East's home sporting events, lending its support, adding pep , and thrilling the specta- tors. The Christmas program proved a most delightful per- formance. The singing of the A Cappella choir, directed by Mr. Blahnik, and the playing of the band, combined to make this holiday program one which will be long-remembered. The students of East High School are grateful for its fine music department and are justifiably proud. lt is one of the I Marching Band '76 Satans M. Lukoff, H. Fuller, D. Robb, M.
