In one hand is held the Torch of Liberty, light of a democratic nation. This unequalled statue stands for the strength and courage that is so much a part of America. East High reflects this spirit of freedom and independence. There is the same essence of democracy present in its program of education-the privilege to gain know- ledge to develop a more responsible, educated ditizenry. The Statue of Liberty, Golden Door to a brilliant nation, is the symbol of promise that is abundant for the American people. East takes pride in ITS heritage, the Golden Door. Our school is a channel of learn- ing through which youth of our community progress: at the end of their journey, they pass through East's Golden Doors into a world of Opportunity. To increase the educational growth of our students, a beautiful new addition to East High has been built. With it, ever-broadening knowledge and deeper understandings can be gained, and more achievements can be possible. Because of these improved conditions, how great is the probability for a more stabil- ized future! East High instills in its students the desire to play the role of the well- informed American. Yes, our school IS that very Torch so dramatically displayed in a hand of the Statue of Liberty, the EIZY to the G n Door o future, eternal spirit of democracyl P s 'I D ff ,X V XQ Q, rev' KTJ MM . Way, is composed of five students from both East and West High Schools. At their monthly meet- ings, these students discuss any problems or suggestions that happen to arise within their schools. as 9. 4.4 It was graduation nights the seniors of East High School marched with dignity and pride to the stage to receive long-waited diplomas: the audience of friends and rela- tives was hushed and silent ..... The days of high school life are finished: a feeling of sadness envelops our seniors as they close the doors of East High School behind them. But a word of Promise greets them. It is with a mixture of anticipation and excitement that these young adults begin a new life: there is determination in their faces, for a great challenge is before them. How will they fare? It is a question that must go unanswered. But, the possibilities of success are wonderful. These youths have the heritage of independence and freedom of educations and they have realized the enormity of this gift. They have utilized these freedoms and devel- oped their talents to the greatest degree. The advantages of school life have not been wasted by them. , Yes, the preparation for this graduation day has proved extensive. But our seniors are ready. The KEY to the future has passed into their hands. Last year's sophomores had become the majority-The Up- perclassmen. They plunged with surprising boldness and confidence into the year's work. Where they had once been uncertain, they grew to know procedure and worked with pleasure and skill. Some joined new clubs others re-established themselves in former ones: still others found new friendships with their classmates. It has been a year for the juniors. Everywhere, these students have taken over, preparing themselves for next year when they will be sen- iors. Initiative and perserverance are words that best describe this body of students. They took the initial step that turned their sophomore timidity into junior assurance. 47 Thomas Adamany www L,w:er' .. If 1:a:,sWef , ,- - -f a-'V A , .,--J ara .. . Now, when Death has claimed you, we wish to tell how the prayers in our hearts are whis- pered, for youg how deeply our loss is felt. Blur there is One above who has seen fit to take you from those who love you: He has relieved your pain and taken away the trials of life. This is a great solace. Our sympathy reaches out to your family and those who knew you. Still, though consolation is needed at this time of sorrow in their lives, we feel that all is not lostg you shall live in their memories, and you shall not be forgotten. Our prayers are with you, Ron. Classes of '62, '63, '64 56 x Sophomotes . . . . . . . Class of '64 f ,-,,,-a-v To commence studies in a new environment with confidence and ease of mind seemed a difficult task, but with great determination and even greater hopes, the sophomores came to East High. Yet, amidst the qualms and doubts of upperclassmen, they were surprising, for they displayed the desire to work hard and soon became a dependable, enjoyable unit of students striving for a role in school life. These eager young people were always ready to render their services: they were willing to help where- ever they could. They cheered with amazing gusto at pep assemblies: they joined clubs for the pleasure of working with others toward common goalss they delighted in meeting people: and, most of all, they had the freshest, most vibrant enthusiasm! Yes, as sophomores, where senior high school education just begins, there was a sense of obligation and responsibilitys freedom in democracy, their heritage, was deeply appreciated by these newcomers. 57 Beth Abrohams Jllug ,Flin-xmas!!! These are the activities that East High offerss all are in the spirit of educations all help the students to gain varied interests and outside recreation. What could be more relaxing than singing for an hour a day? What is more exhilarating than playing basketball or cheering the school football team on to a victory? What gives more pleasure than gathering together to play a song with friends? And the youth of East High have taken advantage of these oppor- tunities: they realize the wealth of knowledge and experience to be gained. 81 W ' i'- Cast Julie Bettinger Marge Hoeft . Laughter and gaiety added charm to the enchantment of the night. The glitter of party dresses, and delici ous punch, beckoned all to cross the misty bridge and enter this make-believe paradise .... It was Prom night, and the beauty of the April evening blended magically with the starry atmosphere of the dance. Young girls glowed with lovelinessg their escorts manner-ly, fun to be with. Yes, Charm was the Host of the night, and Beauty reigned as Queen. I fe as : 'D A' 5 fwFf ' , if , r ' Q-. This club makes it possible for sports-minded girls to engage in various extra-curricular sports activities. The club is a nation-wide organization, with each school setting up its own program of activities. The members can participate in all or any sports they desireg if a girl is an active member, she may receive, ac- cording to a standard of points, in honor of her efforts, a letter E . Upon this letter, metals and bars can later be added to signi- fy other achievements. About three times a year the organization goes to a State Play Day, where the members participate in games against other schools. The G.A.A. members of East High plan Tuesday and Thursday meetingsg they play basketball, volleyball, golf, and other forms of sports, hold business meetings and perform school services. This organization is a useful, wholesome ffgtdpfj ...l activity, and the girls of East High enjoy the X' at - 44-J privileges of membership. 9.221 , Qe1.,d5 ,gif-aff JA ' 'd V342 K '7'-2664, I X SITTING: Arlene Mineau, A A Barbara Samorske, Joyce Wickrnan STANDING: Kathy Rutten, Janice Vin- cent, Helen Hinkleman, Mary Kelly, Ann Hussin, Judy Diezel Lumllwhn T ., Joel Gordon Finalist-National Merit Scholarship Competition Joel Glickman Green Bay Symphony Jean Blumenkarnp Most Valuable Student D. We have many rights and privileges that have not been awarded to many people of other nations: but being Americans, we also have the duties that not only do, but must go hand in hand with the rights. As an American, Ihave the right to persue my dreams and am- bitionsg Ihave the rights gauranteed me by the Constitution. With all the freedom for which our fore- fathers fought, I am able to seek happiness from this land of rolling plains, rocky mountains, and wind- ing streams. In this the land of opportunity am Iliving, am I working to preserve our glorious heritage for future posterity. My duties are not few, but the rewards reaped from them are so very many. These duties were formed to safeguard my liberty . . . my liberty. Duties such as voting, obeying laws, and working were es- tablished at the same time my rights were formed, for without one the other cannot survive, without either our nation cannot survive. Would it be wrong to say that this land . . . this America is the greatest land, the greatest governing land, the greatest nation now present? Ithink not! 1 am an American. Ilove Americag I love the land. I am an American. In heart, in will, and in mind I am loyal to my God and to my country. If it be in my power to help to make America stronger, bigger, more democratic, I will do it. I am an American. And by me that's only great! Jane Baumgart '63 WW, Q5'yJ!22 w4W,4 f ,Qfigd M fm! 5239?
