Levitas MASQUE AND GAVEL Masque and Gavel, new honorary speech fraternity, assisted by the I.O.L. and Oratorians, was host for the first reorganized speech recital on December5,'4l. During the morning, recitals were held in the speech and English classes. The chairmen of the dis- cussions were Marcia Wood, Floyd Stender, Joyce La- Luzerne, Joyce Kennedy, John Munson and Arbutus Bogle. Those from East who took part in the recitals were Laverne Andre, Eunice Charles, Audrey St. Laurent, Francine Larscheid, Margaret Weeks, Norman Watermolen, Charlotte Frisque, Ruth Current, Alice Menne, Maresa Katz, Elaine Hengel, Florence Bertrand, Carol Huebner, Hortense Flexner, and Carol Schulkoski. The afternoon recital was held in the auditorium. Richard Carroll was chairman. East High presented a radio play entitled nMan Without A Country.u Those participating were George Gordon Kelly, Thomas Gocke, Tiedje, Tom Moore, Joyce Donald Woelz, Donald Reau, Menne. Masque and Gavel members had charge of the Arm- istice Day Program. lt was presented over the sound system, and was an original skit showing the develop- ments in the news from World War I, to the present. The advisers are Miss Ley, Miss Hovde and Miss Williams. . ' Maloney, Jack Levitas, James E. Hansen, Wilbert Kennedy, George Larsen, Carol Hasseler, and Alice I.O.L. I.O.L. activities began in earnest with the regu lar Combined Arts Fall Recital on November 14. The recital took on a patriotic note with the recitation of poetry of other lands and climaxed with nThe Scum Of The Earth.u Many of the l.O.L. girls took part in the Fox River Valley Speech Recital, to which East High School was host, on December 3. Try outs were held on February 5 and 12. Members accepted and initiated included Marifrances Fleming, Monnie Abrams, Marguerite Jacqmin, Eleanor Sacotte, Nadine McKee and Janice Abrahams. Unusual were the spring activities of the I.O.L., in that rather than an evening recital they presented a Memorial Day Assembly. Officers are: Ruth Current, Presidentg Marcia Wood, Vice-President, Joyce Kennedy, Secretary. The advisers are Miss Williams and Miss Ley. v ORATORIANS The Oratorians have been even more active this year than previously. They presented a Truth Or Con- sequences assembly in the early fall. They acted as one of the sponsors for the December 3, speech meet. They presented original oratory assemblies o April lO, l7, and 24. The inspirational orations were of a patriotic theme. An innovation in club activities resulted in pre- paration for the Pannel Discussion held in Oshkosh on April 15. In preparation for the meet, the boys held intra-club panels on nDoes The High School Meet The Needs Of The Present Day.n Those selected to attend the meet were James E. Hansen and Dick Lewellen--who also presented their original orations there--John Munson, Robert Lavaque, George Maloney, Jack Levitas, Roland Hershman, Duke Gocke, Floyd Stender, Gordon Kelly and James D. Hansen. Others who did not go to Oshkosh were Tom Bur, Dick Carroll, and John Woltjen. The advisers are Miss Hovde, Miss Hessing and Mr. Mac- Phail. BRIO? Of this large group, one hundred and ten girls have attended the traditional candlelight initiation ceremonies and have become active members in the organization. New activities in the G.A.A. this year were tournaments in dart ball and croquet, a hay ride, and the fall folk dance which served as a get-acquainted party for over two hundred East High girls. In addition to those activities, the G.A.A. supervised kick pin ball, volleyball, softball, basketball, bowling, archery, badminton singles and doubles, ping pong singles and doubles, tennis singles and doubles, hiking, bicycling, and horseback riding. Also included in the year's activities were a roller skating party, splash party, Christmas party, initiation party, alumnae games, spring picnic, sale of shakers and mums for the East-West game, burlesque of the faculty basketball game, and the senior cottage party. In trend with the times, most of sports being chosen in the club. The and conducted the various tournaments High girls. Another new policy adopted this vice in the organization instead of the G.A.A. leadership was voluntary this year, no particular heads of more active senior girls, assisted by juniors, organized, advertised, and events which were open not only to G.A.A. members but to all East year, was that of awarding gold recognition pins for two years of sen for three years' work. More specifically, pins were awarded to girls who for two years attended the monthly meetings of the club, participated in three-fourths of the activities held, maintained at least a HGH average in academic work, displayed outstanding sportsmanship in games, and were recommended by faculty advisers for their citizenship and leadership. Girls who earned their awards this year were Helen Tauscher, Doris Berceau, Betty Piton, Betty Shuber, and Mary Jane Pakanich. Other sen- iors who were awarded pins last spring were Elaine Barras.
