such a happy atmosphere before. and visit me at any time. My address is: Claus D. Schuebel Cologne-Lindenthal Wuellnerstr. I4O Germany DALE COVENTRY AMERICAN FIELD SERVICE SUMMER STUDENT When I think that I've really walked through some of the cathedrals or ridden a bi- cycle along some of the cobblestone streets that I see pictured on travel posters in the travel bureau, then last summer all seems like a dream. It was such a wonderful dream that I wish everyone could have had the some experience. I miss many things in Germany . . . remains of the worId's culture still standing . . . the difterent customs and traditions . . . but most especially the friends I made while I was there. I shall never forget the hospitality of these people and their curiosity about the true picture of America and her people. I have great admiration tor the Germans because ot their ambition, their simplicity ot life, and the pride they take in their heritage. I can't explain it exactly, but atter my summer experierce I felt like a new person inside. This experience has enabled me to view things with a much wider perspective, l no longer am limited in the reactions ond feelings ot on American only, but now am able to look on situations from the outside as many others do, Perhaps one ofthe greatest things gained trom my summer experience is the apprecia- tion l now have oi my own country. The friends I made this summer truly regarded this country as the land of opportunity, tor in many European countries the success of individ- uals is limited according to their social and economic backgrounds. This experience has shown me that it more world problems could be solved on a basis like that of the American Field Serv ce exchange, the people ot the world cou'd rrake much foster progress toward international peace. It is only through living with the peo- ple ot the world that we can truly understand their lite and their problems, Dale Coventry 17 AMERICAN FIELD SERVICE FOREIGN EXCHANGE STUDENT For one year it was like a dream you can not evaluate and iudge b to e it is o er Very soon I will be called back to reality Only in later years probably will I eral e th t ths was the most wonderful year of my lite The past school year here with you tlew by I want you to know that I g e the c edt for that to you, to your community, and al the charming people in it You u t nev r tor get that every individual contributed so much to mak ths st y an unto gettable one For instance, I will always remember all the happy taces during th school day in the halls. Even tellow students I could never talk to said h t me os t I wer one 0' t e friends and this made me feel simply gay and satisfed It did not take ong b ore et really like a member of this little school commun ty ra h r than on outsider or o guest So one thing that I will be taking back is the American happiness for I never experienced The true test of o civilization is not the census nor the size ot cities nor the crops no, but the kind of man the country turns out This is why I came over here - to see and to live with your people who are establishing this civilization. I was sent here as o link between your people and my people I have criticized the bad things and I was impressed by many outstanding and uncomparable achievements, You showed these things to me every day and I will carry them back home and tell my people about them so that they receive an obiective picture of your nation If anyone of you will ever get somehow to the old country be sure to drop me a note
