The cornerstone for East High was laid in 1925, 27 years ago, in a beautiful setting of white birch and spruce, located at Hawthorne Road and Fourth Street. As the years have gone by, the trees have grown up along with East, until now, we have a very distinctive campus. The maturing of East has been gradual, over the years. The most important of these changes has been the change of East from a junior high school to a full six-year school. This was done in 1950, with our first class of '49 gradu- ating in 1951. Another change was the remodeling of such rooms as, woodworking, forge, and art as classrooms to meet the needs of an increased enrollment. The enrollment of East this year is 1300. ln contrast, the enrollment the first year was about 800. East has received much community support which has aided us greatly over the years. The community also supported East in the purchase of our beautiful organ, moral support in making East a six-year school, and in the purchase of our electric scoreboard. Our P.T.A. assisted us in the purchase of our band uniforms, and helps every ear in raising funds for school proiects. East has helped itselglthe last few years by conducting a magazine sale, sponsored by the Crowell-Collier company. Proceeds from these sales have gone toward the purchase of our new intercommunication system, which was installed last summer. ln 1952, East received a charter from the National Thespian Society, other honor societies to which we now belong are the National Forensic League and the National Honor Society. Along with the physical changes at East, there have been spiritual changes. The self-reliance of the students has changed a great deal in the last three years. Our Student Council constitution has given the student ample opportunity to make his own decisions. The relation between the faculty and the students has also matured, the accrediting committee of the North Central Association spoke in its report of this year of the fine relationship which existed between students and faculty. Completing its first full year in the spring of 1928, and now, in 1953, com- pleting its 25th year, we of the Birch Log staff look with pride at past accom- plishments of East, and to the future with an assurance that East will continue to serve its community and nation. Conso e of the New Intercommunication System Row l, L. Shapiro, David Skaret, Donnie Phillipps, H. Zimm. Row 2, D. Davidson, R. Olsen, G. Arnold, J. Oien. The largest addition to our school this year is the new Rauland lnter-Com- munication System, secured with money earned in magazine sales. This modern educational tool has many uses. Radio programs, tape recordings and any size or speed phonograph records are some of the things that can be sent over this system. Two program channels enable us to send out two different programs to any room or number of rooms simultaneously. With two different programs going out at once, we still have a communication channel open to send out announcements. An automatic program timer enables us to record radio programs automatically at any time. Microphone outlets scattered throughout the building make it possible to record from any location in the building by moving only a microphone. An emer- gency circuit allows us to send special bulletins to the entire school even if the ignition is off and the key gone. This emergency circuit will cut out anything that may be going out to the rooms. This year's operators, with Mr. Ludden as the adviser, are: Gordon Arnold, Donald Davidson, Gilbert McDowell, John Oien, Rodney Olsen, Donald Phillipps, Leslie Shapiro, David Skaret and Howard Zimm. 6
