Members participated in concerts, school assemblies, performed at PTA meetings, and assisted the senior orchestra in raising money for its annual concert trip. This group is an intermediary group between the seventh grade orchestra and the senior orchestra. The seventh grade orchestra's repertoire included marches, overtures, chorales and novelties. Under the direction of Mr. Berge, both iunior high groups climaxecl the years' activities by performing in the city-wide music festival in the spring. A few of the orchestra members played with the Duluth Junior Symphony and school string ensembles. 22

' This year East's A Orchestra has seemed more like an organization, and less like a school subject than in former years. This was because there was more group co- operation in working for a goal. For the past few years the orchestra has been thinking of taking a long trip, and this year the members were able to raise the necessary funds. The orchestra's ninety members willingly contributed to working on proiects, such as a hanger drive,a bake sale, and candy sales. Special fund raising concerts were held, among them a talent show, and a pop concert. During the pop concert, food was sold which was contributed by orchestra members. Because there now was a need, the or- chestra chose officers. They were: Wendell Hilding, president, Mary Mahnke, secretary, Susan Sebo, treasurer, and Joan Sundeen and Sue Hatlestad, librarians. Selections used in concerts were chosen from pieces rehearsed during the year. Among the composers were Leroy Anderson, Enesco, Schubert, Verdi, Adam, and Victor Herbert. Concert leaders for the year were Mary Mahnke and Wendell Hilding.
