A-I BAND Strutting their flashy new red and gray uniforms about town, the East High A-l Band brings to a close an eventful year. During the year the band has taken an active part in the activities here and in the community. The band gave two splendid concerts under the able direction of Mr. Vickers this season, one on December 3, and another, the Band Festival, on April l. The latter was a combined con- cert of the three bands, the A-l Band, A-2 Band, and B Band. The proceeds went to buy ten additional uniforms. The assistance of the Band Parents club did much to make the Festival a success. Some of the pieces presented at the concert were The Barber of SeviIIe, Victor Herbert's Favorites, Military Escort, and The Student Prince. Away from school, the A-l band played at the Lions Club and Scottish Rite. Participating in the Miss America, Boy and Girl Week, and Memorial Day parades and the Music Festival was a thrilling experience for the 67 members. Formed from members of the band was the German Band which played at assemblies, the Scottish Rite, the Lions Club, Kiwanis Club, and the Talent Show. Also or- ganized was a Pep band which played at pep assemblies and games.

This certainly fits this year's Birch Log Staff. ln September, every staff member racked his brain for ideas for the annual. After an idea was decided on, our busy editor drew up the dummy with the advisor, Mr. Jones. To open the subscription campaign, the solicitors met to discuss the plans. Everyday each solicitor visited his assigned homeroom and collected subscription money. The homerooms with IOOWL or more received a 10 cent refund for each subscriber. A reward movie, Babes in ToyIand, was shown to all subscribers. At last the long awaited individual pictures arrived. Every available member of the staff was put to work cutting and identifying pictures. For three feverish days the staff worked with the photographer in taking pictures. In the midst of their other activities the staff sponsored an all school Valentine Dance and much of their time was spent in decorating the cafeteria. Lonnie Sandborn and his band furnished the music. Securing ads, proofreading copy, and mounting pic- tures took the balance of the time. As April lst was the deadline for all the writeups, everyone scrambled to meet it. Finally, when the Annual was off to the printers everyone relaxed with a sigh of relief.

A ORCHESTRA A visit to 224, the orchestra room, finds exciting re- hearsals going on at all times under Mr. Berg's capable direction. Perhaps the A and B orchestra is busily re- hearsing for a coming concert: or the ensemble club is preparing to play at one of it's many appearances, or maybe they are planning an exchange program with another high school, or practising for the anxiously awaited Music Festival. Friday, the lst of December, was the date of the first highlight in the orchestra's busy year. lt was a concert held at East, with both orchestras, the seventh, and the ninth ensembles all participating. Etta Gillelland, accom- panied by her sister, played a cello solo and a novelty number, The Cat and the Fiddle narrated by Tom John- son were the highlights of the program. Another concert was held on April 29, which featured Mary Wilson at the harp, Lynette Olson, who sang a solo, and Elizabeth Alspach, a cellist. There was a wide variety of music ranging from Haydn to Tschaikawsky. The Music Festival, held every May in the Armory, is an annual program sponsored by the Minnesota High School Music League in which all Duluth Senior and Junior High Schools participate. East's orchestra always does a good iob and this year did exceptionally well. All in all, the orchestras have had an unusually busy year with a lot of fun and experience too.
