A highlight of his was to participate in the Meninak Bowl game at Jacksonville, Florida. Playing offensive fullback and defen- sive lineback, Bob-in spite of a serious knee iniury this year-proved himself an invaluable player and a wonderful leader. His election as the 1953 football cap- tain was but one of the many honors dis- tinguishing his high-school career. Duane helps to make the record. Z Eeeofzd, 1953 The Mountaineers, plagued at Hrst by inexperience and strong opponents, under the skillful coaching of Charley Moffett and his assistants, steadily developed into a powerful team, adding victory unto victory to emerge at the season's end in triumph as City Cham- pions. Faced in the hrst game by a big powerful rival, Central High, East by high spirit and determination was trailing at the end of the half by only one touchdown. A pass from Ellenburg to Breenden had achieved an exciting score, Ellenburg adding the extra point. In the second half sustained valor gave way to waning strength, and East was overwhelmed 34-13.
