74055455 57 The East High Mountaineers started their first season off with a bang by ramping a highly rated Rule High l9 O in the first game played by the Blue and Gray Big Buddy Cruze was the standout scoring two touchdowns to start off the season that was to bring him so much fame After this fine start East found out how defeat tasted thanks to the Cyclones from Elrzabethton Cruze and Fred Hankins scored as the Mountaineers fought a loslng battle Harry Ug Spears stole the show as East slipped by a strong Johnson City eleven by l4 6 It was there that Spears began to show promise as a good T quarterback In what was probably the most excitung game of the decade the valiant Mountaineers fought the only to loose a heartbreaker 1413 The fans went away lustly proud of the team that came so close to dropping the powerful Oak Ridge team Buddy Cruze and Fred Hankins again scored for the losers with plenty of assistance from Whitey Corneliussen Cornellussen and Hanklns teamed up to win a lopsided 330 victory from the hapless Rebels of West Knoxville Vernon Romlne showed he had what it took as he turned In a great performance to boost East to a win over the always troublesome Kingsport Indians Center Jim Simpson stole the ball from the hands of a Morristown back and raced untouched to goal to start the scoring that ended 33 20 in Easts favor lntolerable weather sloppy mud sub freezing weather and a determined Young Hugh team com bined forces to hand East its third loss of the season The Mountaineers played great ball but the breaks went the wrong way and they were not able to overcome the odds Don Rawls was the outstanding player rn the East Central game He smothered the Bob Cats run ning attack play after play to aid the Mountaineers to a l2 O win over the Fountain Cltlans Just about everybody got into the act as the Mountauners stomped the Fulton Falcons 350 ln a game almost void of running plays on the part of ast After the last game of the regular season the mighty Mountaineers gourneyed to Jacksonvrlle to only to lose 1913 The heat and Lee Highs two platoon system were important factors Throughout the season the games were spiced with fierce line play on the part of the Mountaineers Frank Hall elected next year s co captain held down one end post while All American Buddy Cruze ably took care of the other Tackles Jug Rawls and Clyde Morgan tore the other team apart Guards Ray Rea gan and Greek Tampas turned in consistently good games and Center Jim Sampson was a scrappy hard fighting team player Gutstanding subs were Sam Oakes and Bob Henry on the line and Jerry Vaughn John Lund rnext years co captarnl Dean Cox and Duck Miller As a whole it was a great showing for the first year Mountaineers I . E , mighty Wildcats from the Atomic City to a standstill participate in the Neninak Bowl. They fought valiantly 77
