COACHES GENE FARRELL AND RUDY CARLSON After seven years as head mentor of the Black Raiders, Coach Gene Farrell announced his retirement this year. His career as coach at East High has been marked by fine seasons and great teams but more important has been his influence on the boys with whom he worked. By word and example Mr. Farrell has served to inspire hundreds of boys during his years as head coach. LITTLE CYCLUNES RIP RHIDERS 20-0 Even though the final score showed the Ames Cyclones the winners the Raiders really forced the Cyclones to fight hard for the 20-O score, and the Raiders fought to the last minute of play despite their handicap of injuries. Ames, lowa's second ranked eleven, started the scoring after 5:49 had gone by in the second quarter with a 38 yard aerial. East still fighting for ground, was forced to punt and Ames took over on East's 40 yard line. The Little Cyclones connected again with another pass for a touchdown making the score T3-O. East rallied again but Larry Munson of Ames picked up a Raider fumble. East held the Cyclones for two plays but Greg Gammack plunged over the line for another touchdown. Halfbacks Clare and Suter sparked the Black Raiders' drive which carried for three clowns and 65 yards. Clare's big run carried the Raiders to Ames' 17, then to the 9 and to the 4. One more play brought East to the 3 where time ran out. HEI-ILHN NUDGES EAST 13-6 Spirited by East's Black Raiders, this intercity battle was fought to the deadline. The Raiders fought hard in every play and gave their best in spite of iniuries and manpower shortage due to illness which had taken a heavy toll ot our first string players. East High's strong defense in the tirst quarter held the Crusaders to a O-O score. In the second quarter East got oft to a bad start with a tumble recovered by Heelan. The Crusaders drove tor a touchdown to make the score 740. The Raiders bounced back with a 71 yard drive sparked by Clare, Suter and Thompson. With the ball on the 2 inch line Clare plunged through to make the score 7-6. The hard fighting Eastmen recovered a tumble on the Heelan 34. Dick Gill and Pat Clare brought the ball down to l-leelan's 6 but were unable to score and Heelan took over. Neither team scored in the third quarter but East dominated throughout the time. The Crusaders scored again but not without trouble tram the Raiders. Tom Bennett averaged 44 yards in 4 boots and Heelan was held to a total runback of only TO yards. WHTEBL00 ESCHPES RHIDEBS I3-6 East, crippled with iniuries and illness, shocked Waterloo fans early in the game with a 62 yard pass play Cormany to Bennett, carry- ing the ball to the Waterloo 21. A strong defense on the part of Waterloo held East to small yard- age and the Wahawks took over on their own 16, Waterloo caught fire and marched 84 yards to its first score of the game. Well into the 2nd quarter Waterloo picked up a Raider fumble and ad- vanced to East's 13. Waterloo's Aaron Byrd, on a fourth and eight, took the ball into the end zone on a double reverse and galloped to make the score T3-O. The tables turned in the second half. Switching from a single wing to a T formation nearly brought the Raiders out on top. Fighting and driving East penetrated deep into Waterloo territory with an 84 yard drive only to have Waterloo take possession of the ball. Unable to move the ball out Waterloo was forced to punt. East, with grim determination took the ball on their own 49. Pat Clare, a surprise starter because of an ankle iniury, sparked the team to a touch- down. The scoring ended here but the Raiders greatly impressed everyone with their outstand- ing team effort. EAST CBUSHES FURT DUDGE 27-0 Storming back after Three straight losses, The vengeful and hungry Raiders rudely knocked high ranking Fort Dodge from the unbeaten list. Pounding Pat Clare, East High's all-stater, slammed for 3 touchdowns and 2 extra points but it was The stout Raider line that really spelled doom for the Dodgers. The East High linemen tore gaping holes in the Fort Dodge forward wall, making it easy for the speedy backs to scoot through for long gains. On the other hand, when the Dodgers put the ball in play The Orangemen stubbornly refused to budge and allowed their foes a mere five yards net rushing for the night. East scored early in the first quarter with Clare carrying from TO yards out. A recovered fumble on the Fort Dodge 19 set up the second T. D .... a pass play from Cormany to Mann. The Raiders scored again in the third and fourth quarters with Clare accounting for both tallies. The hapless Dodgers put together only one maior drive which penetrated to the East T3 where the Eastmen crushed the threat. The score could well have been much more lop-sided had the eager Black Raiders not lost the ball four times on fumbles during the game. WHRIIIURS SLIP BY EAST I9-6 The Raiders failed to put together a good ground operation and suffered their fourth loss of the season. East was unable to hold the Sioux Falls Wash- ington eleven when they scored as the result of a blocked punt. Taking the kickoff East drove, for its deepest penetration to the enemy 32 but never threatened seriously. The Warriors scored again with a quick toss to Haaland and Sioux Falls carried a 13-O lead at half time. East's of- fense began to iell when they put together a scoring drive on the Raider 46. The scoreboard read 13-6 for Sioux Falls with 55 seconds left in the third quarter. With 4 minutes gone in the last quarter Sioux Falls came storming back with another scoring drive to make it 1946. Fighting back viciously East drove to the Warriors 35 but lost the ball on downs, and late in the game threw a desperation pass, which was intercepted by the Warriors killing all hope of a possible victory. Rain fell in the third and fourth period, hampering the Raiders' ground attacks.
