Despite their disheartening losses, the team held up Well under the pressures of the East High Students and the Faculty. During the season of two Wins and five losses a sense of togetherness and an exciting vigor did not falter. Coach Batey thought after tying such a good team, that they were headed for a Winning season. Students and teachers enjoyed the frivolity and dancing while l listening to the melodious sounds of the Mellow Moods. Choose 14 more mini-courses. . . At registration for second semester, one saw students pushing, shoving, kicking, and crowding each other, but that was only trying to get to the 4th floor. After making it to the lunchroom, students stood in line for as long as 15 minutes, just to find out the classes were full. Screams and cries were heard throughout the school. Next came the hassles of the l.D. line. To the dismay of students, the line not only lasted an hour, but was in- vaded by innumerable line crowders and cheaters. While waiting, one had the time to fix their hair, brush their teeth and fix their lipstick. ln the end, one was photo- graphed, fingerprinted, put on file, and released. Sure the bold and brassy, stylish Angels were still there. But, somehow, the breaks that the old fox, Coach Ted Calloway fbetter known as T. I. D, expected never quite made it. While the Angels kept the nets loose, and the fans warm with their play, halftimes became the best pai? of games. Fans received the unexpected, when a different type of hip sway kept the courts cooking. CT A 54 M, if For the swimming team, this year has been a dry run. From last year's team, only three swimmers returned to a new coach. Despite the lack of experi- ence, the twenty swim team mem- bers have done an admirable job. Coach Bill McGinnis felt the team returned swimming success to East. Felix Picart, team captain did an excellent job of providing team leadership. Mike Morgan, Zack Gotlin, Mark I-Iintgen, Dave McConnell, Jack Mosley, Pat Meyer, Sterling Copeland, and six other sophomores on this year's squad should provide the basis for winning seasons over the next few years. Outstanding tal- ent, teamwork, and expert coaching Were the factors that brought early success to the East high grapplers. They devel- oped a repertoire of 15 different dances enhanced by Mexican costumes which were made by their moth- ers, friends, and support- ers. The Ballet Chicano has performed Widely for colleges, universities and community groups in sev- eral states. When it became evident that the folk dances were successful, a theater group and choral group were also formed. The Theatro Chicano takes social and political issues that affect Chicano peoplefand ex- aggerate them on stage. Thus, all aspects of Chicano culture song, dance, and theater are being preserved by the Chicano community. 1 N 4 Q 4 3 Z l ,,,5- 4 1 1 One of the big projects of the year for the I-IEO club, was the Christmas Decoration Contest at the Mission Viejo Show Home. Each of the eight schools participating in the contest was given a check for S250 to use for the purchasing of decorating items. A S300 cash award was given to the school that did the best job. The HEO club at East was the Winner of the award! The club's activities climaxed with this victory but the members continued to Work and play in good spir its for the entire year. N 61 -'l iw' vid 1' A UF S TEI GER The Aufsteiger Mountaineering Club has once again had a year of climbing, touring, and hiking trips. Under the leadership of Martin Nuebert, the club ventured to such areas as the Eagle Piney Primitive Area. Aufsteigers goals are to bring the many students into the surroundings of wilderness for both recreational and education reasons. Easts enthusiasm for the club finds Aufsteigers a practi- cal and enjoyable way to reach the mountains. HA TCHE TS B SPEECH TEAM A' S, Q .Qi .. swn M Q L . -. I 3 Not only does the speech team have winning power but it has something more devastating than any sweepstakes win - the power of people. The hatchets display an aura of togetherness about +. - ii which others dream. There lives iv-mx are spent at cross state drives, at 6 a. m. breakfasts, at motels, and at midnight oil practices. PLA YE R The Drama Club at East is in existence for the benefit of stu- dents who wish to increase their knowledge and appreciation for all aspects of the theatre world. The Detroit Street Players opened the season by presenting three one-act plays by O. Henry, the workmanship of about 70 cast and crew members. Immediatly following the closing of O. Henry, the Detroit Street Players went into rehersal for Eloise at Christmas Time This was a childrens play presented at J. C. C. and at East. A musical and another full length play was planned to be done by the players during second semester. Twenty of the Detriot Street Players were initiated into the Thesbians, an international drama organization. THE YEAR OF OUR TR TH o say! can you see, by the dawn's early light, , This was the year, that the people of amber waves of grain, learned the word, short- age. For the student, this year heard the death knoll of the idealism which had so long characterized his generation. No longer could the student movement be zealously dy- namic. Like everything else, it too had run short of gas. Yes, and even excusing the irony of shortage, we suddenly even found ourselves short those amber waves of grain. ' what so proudly we hailed at the tWilight's last gleaming? For us the terrible reality came. The system, that we had long assailed as too big, too impersonal and corrupt, revealed itself to be all of that. Although the student voice had decried this horrifying state, none wished to hear the charge replied to with: nolo contendre, no contest. When the American Dream boy, Spiro Agnew said exactly that, somehow being right, had no satisfaction. whose broad stripes and bright stars, thro' the perilous fight, o'er the ramparts we watched, were so gallantly streaming! A Try as we did, we still could not close out the ugly reality. Instead of the ringing words of genius, Washington provided us only with a deafening silence. We learned much this year however. President Nixon educated his people well: plumbers whose touch was for national security, cabinet members who had the additional, hidden talent for making license plates, and best of all, tapes that for 18 minutes echoed the Washington leader- ship. and the rocket's red glare, the bombs bursting in air, Denver, ah Denver. Yes Angels, readjust your halos, and dust off those old records of Bobby, and Martin. Enjoy an afternoon of reminiscing about that dream, think about that old joke about everybody's beautifulg and try not to forget, that for just a little while integration, wasn't a dirty word. Enjoy your afternoon and your memories, while you watch the sun set on Denver. Try not to forget, because the city is leading itself into a long, long night.
