Language Courses Fulfill Requirements for College East high offers many courses to satisfy college entrance requirements, but the lan- guage department especially seems to have been established for the college-bound stu- dent. Most students elect at least two years of a language because of the strong emphasis on foreign languages by colleges. An important result of the study of a lan- guage is an understanding of the customs of other people as well as a knowledge of the lan- guage itself. This is accomplished through actual participation in foreign customs- singing folk songs, eating foreign food and observing national holidays and festivals. For example this year Mr. Benton Spen- cer's Latin 4 class held a special observance of the Ides of March, the day of Julius Caesar's assassination. l gaoh mf 9 l
