Madame Crawford has been teaching students many seasons, nearly a quarter of the bicentinium. For as long as there has been an East High, and before that time, at Flat Rock High School, she taught the virtues and discipline of the French lan- guage in addition to other subjects. Students of today are generally considered to be less serious-minded than those of past years, but it is the general consensus of stu- dents that in HER classes, seriousness of pur- pose is mandatory. This is a dedication, but not so much a dedication as a farewell. No more will the students of East High hear the friendly chorus of ici in response to her daily role call. Nor will we hear in that reprimanding tone Mademoiselle or Monsieur when we have failed to measure up to the high standards expected of us. We will miss her. Merci, Madame, Merci. East's participation played an important role in the festival. F.H.A. won 2nd place in Best Use of Apples for their float and the Drama Club placed third in the Most Original category. The band displayed its talent with a bicentennial arrangement of Dixieland. East High's own Mrs. Margaret Davidson, Grand Royal Matron of the Amaranth for North Carolina, repre- sented the Amaranth while not far behind, the l.V. and the Varsity cheerleaders clapped frantically en- couraging school spirit in decorated convertible cars. Claude Akins, star of television's Movin On series made an appearance as Marshal of the Parade. Apple Festival!9 On August twenty-eighth students mobbed the lobby of A-Building to sign up for first quarter float registration. Offered float classes varied from tennis and patchwork to volley- ball, liquid embroidery and chess. The sophomores were especially excited since it was their first new experience at East High. Knowing they might discover new and hidden talents made it more appealing while the pushing and shoving suffered by all added to the confusion. Though everyone wanted to be first on the list, there sometimes were more applicants for a class than it could hold. Nevertheless, those who could not sign for their choice found something equally interesting to keep them- selves busy. 1! Sophomores enjoy the mass confusion. 2! Evan Williams disappointedly watches as the last name goes on the list. 3X Becky Cornwell anxiously awaits her turn in line. 4f Coach Carter says, Are you sure that's the way you spell your name? sf East High students ponder over float classes offered. The day of initiation began with an an- nouncement asking all Sophomores to go to the auditorium. With visions of horrors await- ing them, the class of 1978 sat nervously through the welcome speech by Joy Justus. The curtains slowly parted, groans sounded through the air. ln front of the Sophomores sat a sea of multi-colored dunce hats which each person received, personalized with a custom fit. Throughout the rest of the day the halls echoed with recited shouts for demand- ing upperclassmen. Pep rally time arrived. Sophomore football players received a double introduction, one by Coach Hamilton, and one by the wearing of oversized diapers. As the day concluded. the Sophomore class officers were introduced and each Sophomore became an official member of East, having survived Initiation Day! Teams of DECA mem- bers worked together to sell over 54,000 worth of ads to local businesses. A spaghetti supper was held before the Homecoming game to raise funds for the coming year. Other ac- tivities for the club during the 1975-76 season involved taking food baskets to rest homes, parties and picnics for club members, and running the school store. Leading them in these activities were: President-Gwen jackson Vice-President-Darrel Williams, Secretary- Denise Levi, Treasurer-jill Dinkel, Parlia- mentarian-Steve Greene, Photographer-Cal- vin Sigmon, and Historian-Margie Steele. ff' 20!Clubs The 1975-76 season for the Future Business Leaders of America began early in October, when officers were elected and plans were made for the coming year. Outstanding stu- dents in FBLA tested their skills by participating in the District Skill Contest in Brevard. Visits to technical institutes, plants, and local busi- nesses gave the FBLA members a look at the way things are in the working world. The club raised funds by selling Eagle key chains and by taking part in the Christmas bazaar. Serving as FBLA officers for 1975-76 were: President-Iudy Brown, Vice-President-Kathy Hall, Secretary-Leshea Stepp, Treasurer-Trina Cornwell, Reporter-Brenda Pace, Parlia- mentarian-Becky justice, Historian-Sondra Orr. l EAST HIC-H'S INTEREST NCREASES IN THE THESPIA ART 1975 promised to be a year of first for the East High Drama Club. For the first time, the 7 s Drama Club had more than ninety members. T A J C C This year the club entered a float in the Apple Festival parade and was proud of plac- ing 3rd for the most original idea. Pennant sales and the Spring Production were projects for the Drama Club again this year. A myriad of activities included a bake sale in September, participation in Club Week, skits for the maga- zine sales assembly and a cook out at Mills River followed by a viewing of the Movie laws at the Carolina Theater. The officers of the Drama Club for the year 1975-76 were: President-Michael Capps, Vice- President-Phillippa Smith, Secretary-Sandy Stepp, Treasurer-Rita McConnell, and His- torian-Pam Clark. Clubsf21 At the start of this year, Coach Morgan predicted a winning season in volleyball. The girls obliged him and produced a winning season for each team. The Varsity consisted of the twelve veterans of last year. The six and four record of last season improved to an eight and two record this season. The Varsity team defeated Hen- dersonville for the AAA Mini-Mac champion- ship and lost to T.C. Roberson for the overall AAA championship. The team suceeded in placing three members on the AAA Con- ference team. The honors go to Sharon Bed- dingfield, Susie Orr and Kathy jackson. is ftimiitxtg 1! With the encourage- ment of their sponsor, Coach Roy Carter, the seed of spirit grew to produce a multimem- bered club. On Friday mornings of each week, a congregation of students met in the home- room of Mr. John Jarvis. There, for devotions, each participant found sought-after inspira- tion. With Mike Pressley serving as president, J Barbara Walker as vice-president, Jen ny l Thompson as secretary, Joyce Staton as trea- J surer, and Richard Andrews as parliamen- tarian, F.C.A. held huddle groups where T thoughts and ideas were exchanged and then put to work. Athletes had a strong group supporting them this season-the Pep Club. Numbering fifteen vibrant and enthusiastic individuals, the Pep Club helped to arouse and encourage the school's spirit by assembling in a special section to cheer as a group at each game. Officers for this spirited season included: President- Gloria Waters, Vice-President-Joy Justus Secretary- Treasurer-Debbie Sosebee, and Reporter-Jerrie Gass. Boasting a larger membership than in previous years the band could only hope for greater achievements. They participated in a contest at Forest City on September 21 where they placed 4th in a highly competitive field. They also attended a contest in Cleveland, Tennes- see where the band members thoroughly enjoyed themselves, from watching cartoons on Saturday monungtogouryngthenwehesonsweeUoHsThe band obtained an excellent rating. The Color Guard, Flag Corp, and Sabres were rated superior. Students proudly watched as their band provided entertainment during the various half time shows. People used to love their neighbor, any creed or kind, Their excuse today is, they don't have time We are too busy running our machines and driving our cars. Where once stood forest, now stand prisons with steel bars. We've polluted the air, and blackened the seas, killed the grass, and cut down the trees. The sun is no longer bright The smog covers the stars at night. People used to live and enjoy the country side, Now its all city and thoughts of suicide. People either die or hate to live, Take or hate to give. I've often asked why this is my favorite friend, All I've heard so far is the world is soon to end. K Homecomingf47 It all began this season on the third of October when a student council representa- tive from each homeroom announced that candidates from the Senior class for Home- coming Queen would be chosen. Those selected included Anita Mull, Kay Steppf loyce Staton, Tonya Layva, Susie Orr, Becky Pace, Sandra Kay Hollifield and jenny Thompson. The junior class elected Nancy Hill, Sherry Huggins, jill Roberson, Donna Taylor and Toi Walters as their nominees. The Sophomore class presented julie Sutton, Pam McCall, Gail Miller, Cindy Hoxit, and Beth Diehl for elec- tion. On Friday, October 10, a day bustling with excitement, originality was the added touch to an assembly. For the first time ever in the his- tory of East High, slides were shown of the Homecoming Candidates. After returning to homeroom everyone had their choice of Queen in mind. A pep rally followed in the afternoon with cheerleaders leading the school in spirit. This spirit achieved an advantage, for the Eagles led 37-0 during halftime of the Homecoming foot- ball game. Excitement mounted as winning candidates were announced for the Court. They included Susie Orr, Becky Pace and San- dra Kay Hollifield of the Senior class. junior representatives were Nancy Hill, and Sherry Huggins, while those proudly elected from the Sophomore class included Beth Diehl and Cindy Hoxit. Suspense climaxed as jenny Thompson was crowned 1975 Homecoming Queen by the former Queen, Billie Nix. Excorted by Dr. Led- better, jenny made her exit playing a different role than the student she had only moments earlier been. To top off this happy occasion the Eagles defeated the Mt. Sophomores and juniors responded very well to the extra responsibilities and pressures of high school playing. Having lost eleven starters last year, the new players desperately needed to put forth great effort in order to survive the season. The squad had good team leadership with Craig Halford acting as team spokesman on all decisions. Game captains were chosen week by week based on their performance in the preceeding game. Games for the first three weeks were not the best, but after a settling down period, things went smoothly, practices were bet- ter, which led to improved games. Sopho- mores Patsy Ross and Mark Morgan tap danced to a Heat Wave routine complete with psychedelic background while East High's own magician Sam Fain made glasses disappear and swallowed fire. To the sounds of thundering applause Sabra Pace sang and accompanied herself on the piano at the conclusion of the program giving a special encore at the request of Dr. Led better. 90fVariety Show Tr-Hi-Y served the community in several different ways this year. Students worked frantically to meet a December 19 deadline for constructing Christmas wreaths. Ck.v XX Trade-mark Q - Q 1 CD N , E 1701 Advertisements This past spring, on the last day of school, an announcement was made which came as a surprise to both students and faculty alike. Mr. Kenneth Hysong quietly announced to his students that he was retiring. This announcement came as a shock to those of us students, who, though not always having appreciated his iron hand, always admired and re- spected his instructing ability and discipline. Most of us have not quite been able to live up to his high expectations of us, but perhaps if there had been more teachers along the way with his tremendous dedication and willingness to help, the road would have been easier. His leaving is a great loss to East High. Mr. Hysong!'171 KEEP CN TRACKIN The 1976 track season proved to be a bit disappointing for its members. However, they were enthusiastic and managed to finish a con- sistent third or fourth in most of their meets. Mark Moreno, perhaps the outstanding parti- cipant in many events, broke two records in the pole vault and triple jump, and won the coveted Denny Pace field award. ar-L -J .t, ' Boys Track! 173 The 1975-76 Girl's Track Team led by Captain Cathy jackson strived hard to make this season a prosperous one. The team being young and inexperienced managed to place third in the county and tenth in the conference. Cathy jackson was chosen Most Valuable and Linda Summey Most Improved. . Eager to play on the East baseball team, sophomores, juniors, and seniors worked hard for a cherished spot either in the out- field or among the infield bases. Soon, Coach King announced his team roster. The chosen players prac- ticed hard and played even harder. These players were: Standing - Barry Capps, Russell Pressley, Sam Burgess, Eddie Watkins, Greg Gordon, Dale Bradley, Danny Nix, Carl Burzynski, and Chris Franks, Kneeling - Manager Edward Drake, jeff Hoots, Mike Pressley, Kevin Case, Tim Payseur, Richard Saltz, Richard Nel- son, Ken Martin, and Manager Duane Stepp. Not pic- tured is Ronnie Burrell. Baseball! 177 l 7 l 4 GOLF The sound of fore and the whack of golf balls echoed over the golf courses as our East High players prepared for another round of golf. They practiced hard and played many matches in their competitive circuits of their conference. Our representatives for the 1976 golf season were Bobby Belk, jimmy Moxely, Ricky Cairnes, this years out- standing players: Franklin Barnwell, Kip Hunnicutt, Rick Jones, and Mike Roper. GIRLS SOFTBALL Sponsored by Miss jones the 1976 softball team practiced hard to produce a win- ning season. Though not entirely successful, the sophomore and juniors gained invaluable experi- ence as they gained fun-filled cameraderie. The participating members of the '76 season were, TOP - Lynette Moss, Lynn Chandler, Carla Thompson, Nancy Smith, Dianne McMurray, Cindy Stepp, Au- drey Warren. BOTTOM, manager, Patricia Hill, Donna Cable, Diane Heatherly, Cynthia Wilson, jerrie Gass, Donna Russell, and Cathy jackson. Not pictured - Karen Austin and Martha Shipman. 178f Golf! Softball This year's Spring Concert started off with vibrant selections of music. The band did a fine job in filling the auditorium with whole notes half notes, and quarter notes as the chorus filled the air with the sweet sound of patriotic songs. This year Mr. Smith tried something new by adding a singing trio, a dance routine, and a chorus line of a few of East's prettiest young ladies. Spring Concertf179 I On April Twenty-fourth the juniors and Sen- iors and their dates entered into what was formerly the East High Gym. With a few major changes the junior class turned the gym into a dream with the theme, Midnight at the Oasis . Sophomore FHA members dressed as harem girls served drinks and snacks. The decorations consisted of posters of desert scenes, camel decorations on the tables and harem pillows in the middle of the dance floor. The band, Justice, played tunes by Edgar Winter, Lynard Skynard, Foghat, and The Doobie Brothers. They were rewarded with a standing ova- tion at the end of the performance. The program con- sisted of two one act plays and a variety show with Charles lohnston as Master of Ceremonies. The play Once Upon a Playground directed by Miss loyce Loff tin, received a superior rating at North Carolina High School Dramatics Association in State competition in Raleigh. Once Upon a Playground , a play about the social prejudices of children, was light and humorous despite its serious theme. Heat Lightning , directed by Becky jackson, received an A-2 rating at the district competition at Tuscola. Heat Lightning, a suspenseful tale, kept everyone on the edge of his seat. The variety show featured a cabaret theme complete with tables, candles and entertainment. Patsy Ross and Mark Mor- gan won both first and second place in the variety show and went on to represent Eash High at the Fabulous Fourth. Spring Prod.f187 Sad to be leaving their friends, but elated to know that they were to be moving on to bigger and better things, the graduating class of '76 silently reminisced about life and times at the traditional awards assembly. The stage was all a sparkle as the curtain backdrop was embellished with a tremendous red, white, and blue, Class of 76 symbol. Also on the side walls there were drawings done by the talented Seniors. Cathy Freeman and joy lustus felt the lumps in their throats as they opened the assembly, the last time they would stand on the stage. Tanya Leyva, accompanied by Pat Corn play- ing the guitar, sang the class song, Time in a Bottle. Michelle Raymond, who received the AFS scholarship, sang an original song which she and Tim Hefner composed especially for the class. Sabra Pace wrote and sang to her own accompaniment, a song entitled Won- dering for which she received a standing ova- tion. One by one the seemingly endless list of scholarships and awards were given. Nearing the end of the assembly, joy Justus, class presi- dent, experiencedhtwings of uneasiness and misty eyes as she gave her farewell speech to her fellow students. Still the halls of East High are walked by former Seniors as they cannot seem to relin- quish memories, they hold dear of the Big Green and White. 188f Awards AWARDS '76 Awardsf189 -li' V' 'N 4 Q 5 'i . ,: bi' K im 334 A. 1 n nllylll v.' sllgm' '51 N v Y I VQX4 .1 - tx 1 !. - . ,' ., . , l yn' l 1 , - -I Juv - ' 17 'I I' rf NI, I Q .
