As the school day officially began, teachers and students bombarded the office with excuses, tardies, and schedule changes. Dr. Ledbetter and his staff calmly faced all calamities that arose. Teachers and students, utilizing the office as neutral ground for airing complaints, found workable solutions. Administrationf19 Every morning while we were yawning our way into another day the ladies in the lunchroom were busily preparing the noon- day meal. When finished with the preparation of the lunch, the ladies dug in behind the counters and readied themselves for the hungry hordes of class weary students. The warmth and cleanliness of the buildings, important and generally unrecognized comforts provided by our custodians. 'lfFulfilling the needs of hungry students this years cafeteria staff are, Left to Right, Bessie Smith, Eula Case, Mabel justice, Callie Iohn- son, and Ruth Ward. 2fKenny Walker provides many necessary services for the school. 3fThe man everyone turns to for heat on a cold day or light when the bulb is blown is Mr. Charles Williams. 4!Mrs. Faye Chandler helps to fulfill the teachers needs as well as the students. ,, l....... The Business Department took into its hands the responsibility of instructing students in skills to carry them into a better tomorrow. Students in Typing I found themselves learning the keyboard and attempting to keep in step while time writing. Typing Il students, with the keyboard now second nature to their mind and hands, typed their days away. Miss lones completed her first year at East with the satisfaction of seeing her students complete projects in perspective drawing, ceramics, string art, sculpture, and many other interesting and enjoyable forms of art. 1fMiss jones carefully examines ceramic mold for even texture and defects. 2!Keith Young displays amazing dexterity in his sketching of a tree. 3fTammy Laughter puts the last few touches of glaze on her mug, a popular ceramic piece with art students. Art! 23 At last year's seminar on the UNC-A campus, the staff won a full spread of color. With this bonus and the new ad lay- outs, the 1975 Highlander staff worked hard to increase the quality of the book. Annualf25 26X Newspaper Under the guidance of Mrs. Dianne Lanier and Lynn Gladieux, the newspaper staff turned out the 1974-75 Echo. This year's price for the Echo was raised a nickel because of the rising cost of paper, print- ing and use of the press. The members sweated and stumbled their way through the August heat and suffered the imposed water rationing of band director Mr. Smith. The lack of water was quickly forgotten when afternoon practice was invaded by a tobog- gan-toting streaker. The heated and hectic summer practices worked their way around to the first apprehensive halftime ap- pearance. But all nervousness was left far behind as the band went on to the completion of marching season, assemblies and final accomplishment of winning four superior ratings at competi- tion in Cleveland, Tennessee. f. He also noted the team was in the top third of all invitationals attended. After tallying the number of points scored, it was clear that Barry Summey walked away with the most valuable runner award and Harold Cox copped the most valuable fielder laurel. Steve King was slated most improved team member by the coaches. The team finished second in the county meet and fourth in the conference meet. Trackf59 East High's cross-country team felt the agony of defeat as they suffered undue hardships. Stiff competition and rough courses became a challenge as the team toned up. Throughout the season, Ricky King plunged ahead to become the most consistent runner. Coach Jarvis summarized their efforts by saying It was a good year, but team results I weren t as good as we expected. This was the motto which the La- dy Eagles and Mr. Wayne Morgan took during the '74-'75 season. Everything was a team effort. High scoring from Cheryl Cirindle and Kim Grasty yielded the team a 5 and 16 record. The remain- ing 3 starters, Sam Johnston, Kathy Staton, and Barbara Walker added continued control in ballhandling, rebounding, and balanced scoring. Striving to make their last year the best, the senior co-captains Sam Johnston, Kathy Staton and Cheryl Grindle proved their leadership qualities by inciting spirit within the team for the year 74-75. The team showed a lot of enthusiasm, spirit and talent in competition at the frequent half- time performances at basketball games. Members of the team went all around this year with routines on the floor and apparatus. The team was honored with a visit from a troup of gymnasts who partici- pated in the Winter Olympics. C-ymnastics!73 The baseball team of 1974, although consisting of an outstanding group of athletes, could not escape the cloud of misfortune that seemed to hover above them all through the season.
