BASEBALL During the 1955 baseball season East Hartford won eight and lost sixi Following the example of their co-captains, Bob Wood and Bud Skehan, the team showed spirit and hustle throughout the season. Although the record was good, it could have been greatly improved if the team had gotten a few good breaks. Three low-scoring games were dropped by but one run during the season. Throughout the season the Hornets had many fine individual performers. Tom Molumphy, a sophomore shortstop, led the team in hitting with a .458 average. Pudge Seeley, captain elect, led the team in runs batted in. Bob Nurmi, Bebe Martin, and Bob Rataic led the pitching staff with their fine won and lost records. Expectations for the 1954 season are optimistic. Coach Bob jackson will welcome back a strong nucleus of veterans and he expects another winning year. .4 A, - ,, as pp wgrfjj .ME Skehan rounds first. 90 Pudge hits a long one. CROSS COUNTRY TEAM The Hornet cross-country team posted a fine record of four victories and two losses this past season. Led by co-captains Frank Barnes and Ed Stentaford and coached by Mr. Carey, the team was one of the most successful in East Hartford history. Bulkeley, Hall, Weaver, and Middletown were defeated by the well-conditioned Hor- nets in dual meets. The highlight of the season came when the team won first place at the Eastern Sectional Meet. Frank Buzzard Barnes terminated his three years of cross-country running by win- ning the Greater Hartford Meet and break- ing the East Hartford course record. TRACK TEAM The 1955 track season was one of the most successful in East Hartford's history. The Hornets won eleven meets and lost but three over the course of the season. Much of the credit for the amazing record is due Mr. Hurlbart, the coach, and the team's co-captains, Wes Formeister and Frank Hatchett. The Hornets began the season spectacularly. The State Indoor Meet, Hartford Invitation Meet, and the Connecticut Relays were won in succession. As their final won and lost record indicates, the team finished the season in much the same manner as they began it. Five records were broken during the year. Formeister set records in the javelin and discus. Hatchett broke the old marks in the high jump and broad jump and Frank Barnes set a new record in the two-mile run. This year the team will be coached by Mr. Carey, who will have only five returning lettermen on hand. These are corcaptains-elect Barnes and Brink, Woodworth, Lang- ford, and Norman Harpin. 5 . as, fa ,A cg- i 6 1 GIRLS' a nk ,V .. ARCHERY - we're sure William Tell would have big competition if he visited our archery club headed by our chief archer, Nancy Cummings. BOWLING - a few strikes and spares are all in a day with our bowlers at the Bowl-A-Drome. Jeanie Senfluk has been passing on her secrets of how to be a good bowler to her teams this year. PUBLICITY - those flashy signs on the bulletin boards, reminders of sports to come, are the work of our publicity gal, Gail Cooper. OFFICIAL - our playday scorers and timekeepers are recruited by chief official Diane Dowden. ROLLER SKATING - the thrills and spills of roller skating have attracted many girls to the rink. The pros in charge are none other than Grace Bidwell and Vivian Belanger. EQUIPMENT - Sylvia Griffin and Vivian Belanger have had a busy year taking care of our sports equipment. SPORT NIGHT CAPTAINS - these are the girls who are the main springs in Sport Night. They plan entrances, songs, themes, skits, and work with the teams in practice. Piloting Red Team this year was Ann Richards along with Co-Captain Elsie Brown. Captain of Gold Team was Nancy Tuller with Audrey Arnold as her Co-Captain.
