The great and ultrmate purpose of lrfe rs happrness some
thrng yy hrch ey ery one desrres and few attarn Some seek rt rn
yrce and folly and end rn parn and mrsery some rn the amass
rng of wealth and find drscomfort and werghty care some rn
fame and find drsrllusronment and sorrow and yet others
seek rt rn seclusron and find cy nrcrsm and lonelrness Therr
mrstake rs rn seekrng personal happrness and drsregardrng
that of the rest of humanrty The truest happiness lres along
the path of seryrce
Opportunrtres for seryrce contrnually present themsely es
but are passed by unseen or unrealrzed because they are rn
consprcuous Thrs qualrty sometimes causes them to be wrl
fullv neglected srnce they appear to carry wrth them nerther
fame nor honor The smrle the cheery word yvhrch do so
much to add to the rmmedrate happiness of others are spar
rngly employed The small sacrrfice of trme money or com
fort rs by reason of rts very rnsrgnrficance slrghted The
yvord seryrce seldom connotes these
To us all has come or rs comrng the trme yyhen we must
choose a lrfe work Many select that whrch will brrng the
most monev thev expect to find happrness rn wealth But
surely a hrgher rdeal than thrs rs the measurement of desrr
abrlrty by the standard of opportunrty for servrce In busr
ness one rs apt to lose srght of thrs rdeal though rt can be
applred In the field of arts and scrences there rs opportunrty
parrrted yvhrch strll grye wsthetrc delight to thousands Com
posers long dead wrote musrc whrch yvrll ney er dre and yy rll
neyer farl to grye Jov to the apprecratrve Tod ry we read
unrversallv a great prece of lrterature wrrtten bv many men
of many ages the Brble source of lrght and rnsprratron Who
can say that the men who haye gry en us these deep rntellectual
pleasures drd not perform an rrrestrmable seryrce to posterity "
Turnrng away from art we find screntrsts of long ago
who bestowed upon us therr theorres and demonstratrons to
form the basrs for further work rn all fields Our cry rlrzatron
rs made possible bv drscoyerres rn brology chemrstry and
phy srcs The food we eat the clothes we wear and greatest
of all our health whrch enables us to serve all depend upon
scrence
The rdea of the mrssronary rs often brought to mrnd rn
connectron wrth that of seryrce To me the mrssronary s rdeal
rs greatest of rll for by hrs lrfe and work he manrfests that
seryrce rs not bounded by consrderatrons of creed or race
Partly almost wholly through hrs efforts the barrrers of
creed are berng broken down among the most ady anced re
lrgrous thrnkers there rs no antagonrsm betyyeen farths they
do not stop at the tolerance yyhrch rs so often taken as sy nony
mous yyrth loye and may mask hatred they admrt the man
of another belref rnto therr lry es and are thankful for the new
breadth of yrsron thus afforded them

A stream a romantlc look1ng stream wandered through

Regretfully we descended the stalrs loathe to leaye th1s

As we rode farther other New England y1llages came to

before obseryed the calm beautv of them all The qualnt

quotes Mlldred Hobbs ID one of her poems and I found my self
recalhng thlg as our way led through old Wlfldlllg roads once
cow lanes YYl1lCll seemed to ask us Wh1ther" As far
as the eye could travel there were these walls the sentlnels
of our ancestors st1ll on guard
Often were they reflected 1n the peaceful lakes of the
lowlands Whose clear crystal Waters held also lmages of the
overhang1ng trees along the banks S1m1lar reflectxons we
beheld ln the many streams of water some very qulet some
turgulent as they made thelr wav oy er a rocky bed and st1ll

Long after we had returned home the beautv of th1s New

Wordsworth has saxd The world IS too much w1th us
Th1s seems especlally true of New England whose natural
beauty IS so un1y ersal that It often remalns unappreclated
Perhaps some of us do esteem New Englands charm yet
there are many w ho tray el far to observe the beauty of the
North of the West and even of forelgn countrles only to find
that xt cannot compare wlth the sweet homellke atmosphere
of that among New England hxlls

CL ASS PROPHECX
Last summer I y1s1ted one of my father s fr1ends who IS
a customs house ofhcer 1n New York XX h1le I was there we
went slght seelng along the wharyes and through one of the
customs houses where merchandlse from the Orlent IS un
loaded and exammed by the Unlted States officlals Notlclng
my lnterest 1n a cargo of yery beautlful Ch1nese rugs he took
me later 1n the day to a spec1al exh1b1t of Orlental rugs wh1ch
was belng made by a well known dealer
Here an old Ch1naman employed because of h1s knowl
edge of the hlstory and meanlng of the rugs saw my enthusx
asm and hobbled oy er to me In broken Engllsh he explamed
many lnterestmg thmgs regardlng the slze color and deslgns
of those before us In Chlna he sald the larger ones
would be used for wall decoratlons and floor coy ermgs whlle
the smaller ones had been woven for prayer rugs or for
cushlon covers He also told me of the makmg of vegetable
dyes the secret of wh1ch has been carefully guarded for gen
erat1ons by certa1n fam1l1es Unlike the present an1l1ne dy es
they neyer fade from age The colors obta1ned w1th them
are soft and pleaslng In many was to be seen the trelhs Vrlth
the bat symbol of success or the swastlka arranged on It
fretwork pattern of the field lmperceptlble only when the
shades of golden dyed wool were IH certaln hghts and the
border enc1rcl1ng It m clear outhnes Into another rug was
woven the h1story of the great deeds of a noble fam1lV
Thls made me wonder lf It would be posslble to have a
rug woven foretellmg the achlevements of my classmates
The old man and I talked over the poss1b1l1t1es of carrymg
out thls plan and he agreed to have a rug woven for he knew
an old soothsayer 1n h1s home land who would be glad to
work lt out
It IS lmposslble to have our rug here tomght because of
the great length of tlme needed to weave one In fact It takes
manv years to make these rugs dependlng on the number of
knots to the square 1nch But when finlshed lt w1ll be placed
1n the senlor room as an 1nsp1rat1on to all 1ncom1ng semor
classes
Because It IS not here tonlght I w1ll descrlbe It Our rug
w1ll be twelxe feet long and elght feet Wlde The background
IS to be of a tawnv yellow w1th a Greek border and fretwork
1n the center on w h1ch the figures are arranged
The Greek border represents the happmess of Raymond
Llndsay w ho w1ll marrv Helen Bates and llye on the beautlful
shores of the Hockanum Rlver
The trelhs 1unn1ng through the center has fiye bats
arranged upon It s1gn1fy1ng that the five happmesses rlches
longeylty sound body loye of ylrtue and peaceful end w1ll
come to Al1ce Forbes and Catherme Beardsley as members
from Connectlcut to the Unlted States senate and that Angelo
Pmto s name w1ll become a household word after the publlca
