The task has not al- ways been easy, for we have not always wanted to distinguish between that which is right and that which is pleasant. With patience and wisdom our guides have helped us to learn the valuable lessons which ex- perience can teach along the trail. They have en- couraged us when difficulties would cause us to falter or turn backg they have been glad in our successes. The memory of their interests and loyalty will linger long after the trail has faded. 1-wg MR. LESTER D. ANDERSON Director of Pupil. This year under the excellent leadership of Avis Ziegenbien, president, the Inter-Club Council rep- resentatives tackled the problems of improving the club system, club proiects, and inter-school relations. To acquaint the student body with the various clubs, an assembly was presented by the council at the beginning of the year. Helping to present the Student Mixer and Homecoming dance were additional activities. The Club notebook, ex- plaining the purposes and proiects of each club, was made. A special l.C.C. column in the FIinI1ock was originated this year. Other proiects included Thanksgiving and Christmas baskets, special serv- ices and drives, a pep assembly, a spread, an award for the best club, and the annual Inter- Club formal. The other presiding officers were Fred Gray, vice-president, Joey Terryberry, secretary, and Kathy Wilson, treasurer. Mr. Hoskins was the advisor. l.C.C. members pack food for needy families. 55 .X k .M ew, ., W .W -WW its Q .sk . is ,- PEP BOARD- Row One: S. Logie, M. Yudin, S. Brown, B. Albers, S. Vogelsang, P. Each year East sends one elected delegate from each grade to the Grand Valley Student Council. How shall we vote on the dances, and what about the Student Forum, do you have drivers for all of the cars? These are iust a few questions that arise in the Activity Committee meetings. The primary purpose of the Activity Committee is to regulate all school activities such as dances and sales. The half-time ceremonies at the Homecoming game were planned by the Activity Committee. Each dance was rated, and the best dance received first choice ot the dates for next year. After a busy year, the nine members relaxed at the annual Student Council picnic and looked back with pleasure upon the past year. The Activity Commit- tee consists of two members elected from each grade and a chairman, Shane Logie, from the senior class. 1960 has been a good year at East, and we owe the planning of many activities to the Activity Committee. Having students govern themselves during their study periods is a small, but important, beginning in self-government. ln line with this thought, East established a student-operated study hall system which is now in its second year of operation. This year, because of the success of the venture, there were five study halls each hour, four, which were run by iunior and senior honor students, and only one with a teacher at the head. There was another teacher on duty each hour who checked on the student- operated study halls and helped the students with any problems. We are very proud at East to be one of the few schools in the country to have an efficient student-operated study hall system. CLUB '60 Row One: M. Beukema, B. Dvorak, L. Storm, P. Lantinga, A. Kuta's boys dropped the opener to Christian, but came out victorious in the next three contests. Holland proved too much for the boys, but they came back strongly to best Ottawa, Wyoming, and Rockford. After losing a tough one to Grandville, the Pioneers lost the title game to Godwin in Godwin's gym. ln the Districts, East lost the first game to Godwin, 62-59 in one of the most heartbreaking overtimes in history. This year the team had nine fine senior players: Captain Gary McCarthy, Todd Dexter, Dave Barrett, Dick Biehn, Chuck Sharrow, John Young, Terry Cliff Tom Fox, and Bill George. The Reserve Team, under the guidance of Coach Porter, had four wins and twelve losses and took fourth place in the Valley. The Freshman Team won ten games and lost only two. Coach John Alwood went home to relax after such a fine season. FRESHMAN BASKETBALL East ........ 52 BASKETBALL SCOREBOARD - C h ristia n ...... East... ...59--Central....... The 1959-1960 team compiled a superior 10-2 dual season mark, finishing with seven victories in a row. Leading the team in scoring were Kent Dickenson with 84.5 points, followed by Tom McAllister with 79, and Chuck Armstrong with 74. Pool and varsity records established during the season were the 100 yard breaststroke set by Kent Dickenson and the 160 yard medley relay. After wading through the opposition in the regular dual season, the Pioneers frosted the cake with their 13th straight Class B Championship. East steamed through the meet compiling an overwhelming 105.5 point to the runner- up's 49.5. Included in the swamping were six lst. places and new State records being set in the 100 yard breaststroke by Kent Dickenson with a 1:08.5 clocking, in the 200 yard medley relay with a 1:49.1, and by Ted Burba who is the 1960 State Diving Champion. The team completed the season, having won thirteen and losing but two, both losses coming from the State Champion, Kalamazoo University High, by the scores of 5-2 and 4-3. The highlight of the season was a six to one victory over a heavily favored Holland team. The team continued the victory string over Grand Valley opponents, which has now reached 106 Consecutive wins. East moved into the Regional Meet and made a clean sweep of it. ln the State Meet, the boys narrowly missed defeating Univer- sity High and had to settle for the runner-up spot. One of the strong points of the 1959 team was its overall depth. The team elected a most im- proved player, Bill George and honorary captains, Jim Reed and Tony Todd. The returning lettermen for next year's squad include Dick Biehn, Bill George, Dan Miller, and John Young. 'l0 0 East .. East . . East . . East ...... East .. East . . East .. East . . East . . Lack of clutch hits and runs proved the bane of the team as it won four games and emerged second-best ten times. One tie was played also. A pleasant surprise was the pitching of Gary McCarthy, who was moved over from first base. The highlight of the season was the team's over- night stay at South Haven, where East tied a fine South Haven team in a scoreless, rainshortened game on a Friday and dropepd a ten inning tilt to Coloma, l-0, an Saturday. East's powerful track team captured second place honors losing only to Godwin. The Pioneers earned a second in the Regional Track Meet, bowing to Hastings by one-eighth of a point. East's success can be attributed to its depth. ln most events, over sixty turned out for practice. For this reason, there were no outstanding stars, although Dave Molhoek smashed the Regional High Hurdle record with an impressive 14.9. East was well represented at the State Meet by Fraley, Porter, Pantlind, the Molhoek twins and by iuniors, Dave Barrett and Ken Franklin. ke, J. Pantlind, D. Molhoek, J. Fraley, J. Porter, B.
