Rocky's absence the last semester left a gap not only in our Senior Class but also in the school and community. STEPHEN PALFREY TRUOG Dark and handsome describe his appearance: noble and polished, his manner: alert and active, his mind. We were glad to have Steve rejoin the class for our last year at East. PHYLLIS ANN VADER Easy to know and easier to likef' Phyllis has a special faculty for getting along with people. She has shown interest and love for taking part in the activities of the music department. JOHN DAVID VANDER VEEN Take talent and ability. add a nonchalant attitude and smile, and you have lJob. Found on committees and athletic teams all year, Dave represents the spirit at East. DAVID GINRICH VER SLUIS Carefree. unconcerned, and alwavs looking on the brighter side of life, Jules is a well-known member of our class. His great agility as a water skiier will make it pos- sible for him to reach the top in that field. JAMES BARTON VOCT lim was an indispensable man behind scenes as both stage manager of our Senior Play and chairman of our Senior dance. His con- sideration and even temperament go well with that c-a-sual manner and appearance. WILLIAM RICHARD WARING With his unassuming manner and quiet sense of humor, Bill forever seems to be enjoying life to the utmost. His fleetness of foot has been an essential addition to bolh the track and cross country teams. LAURENCE EDWIN WHITE Larry has skillfully guided the class of '56 through its busiest and most difficult year. He is an admirable example of a leader, a scholar, and an athlete molded into one man. EDWIN LEE WIERSTRA Although Ed's voice may not be heard much in the halls or the classroom, it booms forth as a powerful bass when he sings. He has belonged to both the Mixed Chorus and the Wald and Weg Club. 28 ,.-... .. '51- ,'.e I . ' is 1 ' 1 . . , . 'ii i ' 'Z . . , it ... j :sin I' i i ' A ,...V . ,. A ir. The large, active membership in all the musical groups has shown that the student body is beginning to realize the benefits and enjoyments which partici- pation in music offers. llisplaying several humorous and interesting man- euvers, the marching band, under the direction of Mr. Faulkner, played at our home football games. Their marching prowess was further demonstrated at the annual University of Michigan Band Day and in the Halloween and Santa Claus parades. A special pep hand was organized during the basketball season to keep both the crowd and team spirit at high level. Throughout the year the band played at various as- semblies and participated in the Grand Valley Band Festival. Ufficers for the year were Peg Carlson, pres- ident: Marilyn Bergmans, vice-president: Mary Lynne Holcomb, secretary: Marylyn Harrett, treasurer. Proceeds from the Viiinter Band Concert went to- ward trips by the group first to Ann Arbor and later to East, Lansing, where valuable criticism and exper- ience in working with college musicians and direc- tors was received. The ,I unior Band, also under Mr. Faulkner's direc- tion, performed at many junior high activities. Sev- eral members of this band, composed entirely of seventh and eighth graders, were given an opportun- ity to march with the Senior Band during the half- ORCHESTRA Sectedq J, Mitchell, C. Along with performing in regular assemblies and music concerts, the Girls' Clee Club caroled in the elementary schools at Christmas and entered the dis- trict vocal festival held at Junior College. Tory Buchen served as president of the organization, Kathy Bennett as vice-president, and Mary Ellen Bone as secretary. Very actiye this year, the Mixed Choir, led by presidents Dick Emshwiller and Lee Burgett, secre- tary Sue Wihite, and treasurer Phil Albert, sang in both the Thanksgiving and Christmas assemblies and in the Spring Concert. The choir was invited to sing in a combined city choir with the Symphony Orches- tra, at a high school P.T.A. meeting, and in the Grand Valley Vocal Festival. ln March the group traveled to Ann Arbor and East Lansing and benefited by hearing various university choral groups. Chaperoned by Mrs. Prange and Mrs. Michaels, the choir mem- bers traveled by bus and stayed one night on the campus of Michigan State University. Under the direction of Mr. Kingsbury, the orches- tra performed at the junior and senior plays, the honor society assembly, and commencement. The sophomore and junior girls organized triple trios, which sang at various school functions through- out the year, and participated in the district music festival. The sophomores were selected to sing in the all-city variety show, Encore. G. Howitl, B. Bovee, F. Gray, T. Panflind, D. Loomis, J. Ponllind, B, Gordon, J. Willwerth, Mr. Kingsbury, J Folyer. The well- balanced. powerful squad treated the enthusiastic fans to nearly every thrill imaginable. Fairbanks pulled down 'l'onkel's last-minute touchdown pass in the Uttawa game to trip the lndians. and Uunwell did the trick again in the final thirty seconds of the Cod- win tilt as he crossed the goal line after grabbing a long aerial from Andrews. The Pioneers then showed their mastery by downing Vlyoming Park and crush- ing l.owell by a 58-ll score. After edging old jinx Lee. The l'ioneers scored a record total of l37 points against lVlichigan's foremost Class B schools to win easily their ninth consecutive crown. The victory was the culmination ol' another highly successful sea- son. in which the tankers swam a schedule composed almost entirely of Class A teams. liast started the year slowly, losing three of its first four contests: but as the rigorous workouts continuedt the tankers began to cut their times by seconds. 'llhe squad remained undefeated for the rest ol' thc dua meet season and compiled an enviable 7-3 record. B invitation East participated in a special Bowlin Green Meet, in Ohio, in which the swimmers placei second and came within one point ol' winning. Among the many records set by the Pioneers ar Fred Searl's 100 yard free style mark of 53.3, ,lac 0osting's 1:05.41 breast stroke time, and the new stat medley relay standard of 1152.5 by Lee Mulnix, Uos ing, Cai Raber, and Searl. As the victorious Senior prepare to leave, the nucleus ol' underclassmen is a ready eying championship number ten. Championship for Trackmen The 1955 l'ioneer thinclads outpointed their Grand Valley opponents by a 4--1 margin as they crushed all opposition in rolling to their third successive confer- ence crown. The successful squad was piloted by Coaches Reed Wraterman, a master at the art of jig- gling talent, and Art Smith, who served as field event advisor. ln the crucial Grandville meet the tracksters dis- played their tremendous depth and scoring punch while overpowering the tenacious Bulldogs, 66-44. Then, to put the Valley championship on ice, East rolled up a winning total of 52521 points in the Con- ference Meet at Lee Field and remained undefeat- ed in league competition. The success of the team can be attributed to fine coaching and ample reserve power in all field and running events. Among the leading seniors were quarter miler, Roger Blaclsport: pole vaulter, Orville Bliss: and hurdler, Dick Moser. Other excellent performers in- cluded Bruce Fairbanks, Rocky Tonkel, and Norm Bellis.
