O pioneers! On and on the compact ranks, With accessions ever waiting, with the places of the dead quickly fill'd, Through the battle, through defeat, moving yet and never stopping, Pioneers! O pioneers! Have the elder races halted? Do they droop and end their lesson, wearied over there beyond the seas? We take up the task eternal, and the burden and the lesson, Pioneers! O pioneers! A student forum was held at the beginning of the second semester. Other Council activities included supervising the library at noon, sponsoring the Student Mixer and a girl-ask-boy activity ticket dance, and presenting an assembly to honor Theta Pi Eta members. A final project was the building of an indoor schedule board for all sports. I nterclub Council The Interclub Council is the governing body of the school's club system, and through this organization the students are able to voice opinions as to the operation of their club programs. Every school club may send a representative to the meetings, al- though only those members representing Wednes- day night clubs may vote. Because of overcrowded club conditions, two new organizations were established this year through the Interclub Council. A new policy was adopted in regard to club initiations, all of which must now be of a constructive nature, benefiting either the school or community. This year, the members again organized the exchange assembly, which was presented at four high schools in addition to our own. Plans were made for next year's activity ticket and paid assembly programs. The idea of presenting a plaque to the organization displaying the most original and economical decorations at their dance was strongly considered for future years. Tom jones acted as chairman of the committee, and Bonnie Ederle was secretary. junior Senate The junior Senate is composed of representative: elected from every seventh and eighth grade home room. National H onor Society The National Honor Society is composed of in- dividuals who have the following outstanding at- tributes: character, leadership, and service. Mem- bership in this organization is the highest honor obtainable in our high school. Both faculty and members rate those who have a B average, selecting five percent of the senior class at the termination of the first semester, and another five percent plus five percent of the junior class at the end of the second semester. The new members were honored at an assembly, presented pins, and given the opportunity to corn- pete with students from all over the United States for the National Honor Society Scholarship. Theta Pi Eta The purpose of the Theta Pi Eta Society is to honor those students in the senior class who have given outstanding and unselfish service to East High School. To be eligible for membership in this organization, one must have shown, in the eyes of his fellow students and the faculty, exceptional participation in extra-curricular activities during his four years of high school. Each year, fifteen percent of the graduating class is received into this society. These students, who were honored at an assembly in May, were presented pins, which had been purchased by the Student Council and the Parent-Teachers' Association. First row: B. De Young, E. The outstanding programs given were largely made possible through the work of the stage crew. Club '55 Club '55, organized by the Junior girls, fulfilled their purpose of giving service to the community by giving a Thanksgiving basket to a needy family, by knitting squares for an afghan for war veterans, and by helping the Santa Claus Girls at Christmas time. In addition, they gave a come-as-you-are breakfast, a pot-luck dinner, and a father-daughter banquet. The officers were Rita Lou Davis, president, Julie Reeves, vice-president, Margaret Griffith, sec- retary: and Sue Rosewarne, treasurer. Miss Hill served as sponsor. First row: S. Robertson, K. In the fall a special music assembly was pre- sented to the students. The band performed be- tween halves of all home games. On Band Day our band marched at the half of the University of Michi- gan-Tulane football game. It was also selected to perform at the Teachers' Convention in October. Opening the winter season, the Mixed Chorus entertained at the Kent County Teachers' Associa- tion Banquet and was included in the Grand Rapids' Symphony Christmas Concert. The East High Christmas Concert was given entirely by the vocal department. The Winter Band Concert, presented my the instrumental department, terminated the winter season. During the spring, the department spent many hours in preparation for the Grand Valley Vocal and Band Festival, District Instrumental Festival, and the Distrcit Vocal Festival with Solo, Ensemble, and Chorus selections. The annual Spring Concert was given with great success. Scholarships to Camp Interlochen, three given by the Band Booster's Club and two by the P.T.A., were awarded students of the Music Department. Mr. Kingsbury is the director of the orchestra, which played for the National Honor Society As- sembly. The other groups are directed by Mr. Faulkner, who also helped to organize a jazz band to play for the Exchange Assembly. .Y rw-uw.. ffwft'-0027549 MW... 5: r, N wwmimwy 1. ,. W.-MMM it P 5 5 sf. Grand Valley Co-Champs The Pioneer football team ended the 1953 season in a three way tie for the Grand Valley champion- ship. An early season loss to Godwin and a tie with Lee seemed to ruin our chances for victory, but the team, made up largely of veteran seniors, had the drive and determination to Eght for every game. Coach Schiller, ably assisted by Coach Stubbs and, for a few weeks, Bill Durkee, showed the team how to use the single wing and the split T offense. Co-captains Jim Clay and John Jones, with seniors Gary Verhey, Ken Karlzen, and Sandy Beerbohm, plus the juniors Glen Young and Dave Leavenworth led the ball carriers through the line to victory. Without a forward wall of such stalwarts as Kevin Mulvihill, Mike Jacobson, George Douse, Tom Jones, Bob Eleveld, Dick Moser, Phil Chamberlain, Orv Bliss, and Ray Becker opening holes in the opposition's lines, East would have been stopped short of the championship. Our football team also had an outstanding sophomore fullback, Rocky Tonkel, who made All-Conference honors. Other post-season awards went to All-Conference players Bob Eleveld, Kevin Mulvihill, and Mike Jacobson. The latter also was chosen as East's most valuable player. George Douse was elected as the Most Improved player. The young Pioneers finished second in the Re-- serve Football League on the basis of their record of five wins and one loss. Mr. Kuta served as their coach. Second Team Football First row: Manager D. Jones, D. Petrick, D. Mehney, B. Fishman, G. Wixom, T. Halstead, Coach Kuta. Second row: B. Lee, J. Fowler, B. Goodspeed, S. Coached by Carl Schiller, the 1953-54 squad tied Godwin for second place in the Grand Valley Conference. The team finished the season with a 10-9 record, losing most of their games at the start of the season. At mid-season, the Pioneers changed from a zone to a man-to-man defense. Helped by the improve- ment of several boys such as Rocky Tonkel and Roger Blackport, a new spirit was instilled in the team. These factors influenced the late season surge and resulted in the District Championship. The 1953-54 team, paced by John Jones, used a fast-breaking offense. Jones in the Rockford game tied Dave Nash's 1950 individual scoring record of 30 points. Jones was also honored by being selected on both the Herald and the Press All-Conference teams. Coach Kuta's second team won the Grand Valley reserve title for the second consecutive year. Dur- ing the past season Coach Kuta's team won fifteen games While losing only one. The excellent second team players will play varsity ball next year, and they should carry on East's excellent winning tradition. Second Team Basketball Kneeling: Coach Kuta, Mgr. B. Shade. The Pioneers captured a second in the Regional Track Meet, bow- ing again to Grandville by one and one-sixth of a point. East's success can be attributed to depth in most events, since sixty-three boys were members of the team. For that reason there were no outstanding stars, although Mulvihill in the shotput and T. Jones in the 880 consistently won their events. In the Regional Meet, besides Hrsts by Mulvihill, Luce. Beerbohm, and T. Jones, victories were won by the medley relay team of J. Varsity Club The Varsity Club is a service organization com-- posed of major varsity letter winners. Sponsored by Coach Waterman, they helped maintain order at football and basketball games, emphasizing good sportsmanship to the grade school students. With. the money they received from taking down and stor- ing bleachers after football season, the club made plans for an outside athletic bulletin board.
