Student Council Through the fine leadership of Dick Campbell and the guiding light of Mr. liuschman, the Coun- cil did an excellent job of representing the student body. Bob Schermcr served as treasurer, and Katie Crillith as secretary. .Xt the beginning of school, the Council pub- lished a student handbook. The Pioneer, which acquainted the students with many school func- tions. The annual forum gave the students an opportunity to express their suggestions on school improvements. Through inter-school visitatiousq liast achieved a mutual understanding and friend- ship with surrounding schools. Finally, the new system ol' honor study halls gave impressive evidence of the co-operation that existed between the council and the student body. lN'I'ERCl.UB COUNCIL First Row: li. l'Hueeke, H. Snell, T. Burris, T. Burke, C. Inter-Club Council The Inter-Club Council is the governing body ol the school's club system. Every club in school may send a representative to this organization, although only those members representing clubs meeting on the NVednesday evening basis may have voting power. The purpose of the Inter-Club Council is to alleviate problems of the clubs and also to co- ordinate their activities and functions: this year, however, owing to the harmony among the clubs, the council was confronted with few problems. This spring the Council took part in the visitation program in which students from other schools came to East to see our many new school facilities and our governmental system in operation. The officers were Hilary Snell, chairman and Barbara Pfluecke, secretary. Ryan. Second Row: R. Thompson, Miss Postmus, R. Muir, J. Sf.-lling INTERLQCHENS in hull: N, CU,-win and P- Bruwvn, 72 Class History Among all the events that occurred from the time our class passed under the arch to the Barnard building until the time we went down the aisle on that long anticipated graduation night, a few cherished memories remain pertinent in our minds. Paper rings, building blocks, and braided rugs recall the atmosphere of that first year of our introduction to education. The adventure of school made the first few months pass quickly until one day in early spring Hugh Deane was shocked to find that a member of the fairer sex could match his ability in the field of athle- tics by pitching a sidearm curve ball. This female Feller was Pat Campbell. Athletics wasn't the only diversion offered to stem the unceasing supply of energy generated by the '52 live year olds. A play was proposed for late spring. This initial Broadway production was the hrst of many hne class presentations. Pioneers in this dramatic field were Beverle Laird as Sleep- ing Beauty and Harold Brandy as Prince Charm- ing, whose kiss awakened the fair Princess. Hilary Snell held a minor part in this production, but revealed his true talent by sneaking kisses in the cloakroom from unsuspecting Mary Gilhula, Penny Brown, and Ann McLaughlin. liven at the tender age of five, Tom 0'Keefe demonstrated his ability to cope with the female sex by creating a card-table play house in a remote corner of the room. The position of housewife was sought by three eager candidates, Saralyn Norton, Carolynn Loper, and Betty Apsey. As the first year was drawing to a close, .lanice Herrud managed to lure Lee Olsen into holding down one end of the green porch-rockers as she and Ginny Friend bounded up and down on the other extremity. Our introductory year was completed, and most of us were happy over our first promotions. How- ever, Ann Davies and Nancy Corwin felt a twinge of remorse at the thought of leaving their crayons and paint easels behind. Thinking ahead, Lionel Stellar and Gordon Anderson arranged to have their model planes and chemistry sets moved to the Wealthy building. Richmond Willey and Dick Perkins solicited tl1e help of shy Corky Thompson in transporting their encyclopedias and math books to the elementary library. Miss Schnauble gladly released the growing nucleus of the class of '52 to the larger staff of the elementary system. Not only did the Wealthy building have a larger staff, but it also contained more equipment. Molly X'VheeIer and Anne Greenawalt had discovered a piano and were running up and down the keys when a new addition by the title of Robert Walker stalked in and authoritively stated that the piano bench could hold three as well as two. Another joiner, Dave Hamilton, Hoated into our congenial group of first graders and picked up a few valu- able tips from the room pets and his own personal friends, the goldfish. Progress was again shown by all as we advanced to the second grade. Here new heights were ob- tained, namely Carl Shook. It was evident that this Viking would have to entertain himself for several years, for as yet no one was a long six five even in his sneakers. Occasionally, Carl had a few words with acrobatic Marshall York, who also joined our ranks in the second grade. Marsh devised a way of hanging from one of the light globes and looking Carl in the face, while still practicing his alphabet on the ceiling with a three inch black crayon. Two other newcomers collabor- ated on their alphabet practice. Barb Pfluecke made out duplicate exercises so that Bobby Burn- ham could create his ever-famous cartoons carica- turing members of the class. . We triumphantly marched up the long flight of stairs to the third grade rooms and into the second successful stage production of our young careers. The Nutcracker Suite introduced a series of competing tryouts which were as interesting as the play itself. Terry Burke proved most talented and was cast in the role of Mary, the little girl who discovered the old book with its animated charac- ters. Five additions swelled our growing numbers this year. Dean Kesterson introduced his logar- ithm tables to solve Miss Sorter's arithmetic prob- lems. The girls were also boistered by two math geniuses, Sarah -Io Brown and Marth Hinkley, who were just as efficient as Dean with their short cut methods. Vivacious Karen Hagstrom's ability in linguistic powers proved as great in magnitude as the appetite of C. Hoey, who was a large addition in himself. The fourth grade opened new horizons to our learning group. Dick Harrison, supplied with the necessary weapons, began beating a little white pel- let around the links of the various city courses. Walt Whittier and john Barton admitted they couldn't, even with their tennis racquets, hit a ball as Dick could, but they didn't have to walk as far for their exercise. The fourth grade, not to be denied of an addition, welcomed petite Sondra Leonard. To be a member of the safety squad was the am- bition of every fifth grade boy. The high-light of the safety squad year came when all of the patrol boys, clad in their white belts, treked downtown Class Of '52 In '48 for a free showing of the Shrine Circus. Also in the fifth grade, Florence, Hopalong Cassidy, Orth cantered into our advancing troop. judy VerMeulen, entering East in the sixth grade, amazed all of her classmates with her six-foot pig tailsf that only hung to her waist, of coursej. The gym classes were introduced to the swimming pool, which was reopened that year. Upon seeing the twenty-yard mud-puddle, water-baby Sandy Swaney inquired if it would be at all possible to take a few test runs on her water skiis. Two female members increased our fold that yearg Ann Aves brought her scintillating soprano voice, and Mary Erskine brought her psychology books for further study of the human mind. Mechanically minded Dan VanLeeuweng shapely Ginnsie Woodman, service-to-the-school-conscious Germaine Holmes: quiet, demure joan Doering: and Katie Griflith, who, although she has never looked Carl in the eye, has been the only girl to measure up to his requirements of the perfect girl, joined our class as we entered seventh grade and donned our junior high dunce hats. These hats, typifying the scorn of the senior high students, identified us as we ran pell-mell through the cor- ridors. Eighth grade marked the coming of the famous Breton Down gang . Though they were small in number, they momentarily enveloped their class- mates in a feeling of awe. Mick Mcllhiny, jim Oosting, and Don Meyer showed how the sports of football, swimming, and golf could be executed on a professional level. Trackster Ralph Kelley, Dick Mario l.anza Ridge, and Betty jo Muir, who dis- played an enthusiasm for horses, rounded Ollt the Breton gang. A large division of humor and wit was added to the class when Cynthia Stone exploded into our midst. Dave DeVries made his initial appearance in our last year of junior high, bringing with him a keen sense of responsibility and a capacity for doing a job well. Among the events of the eighth grade, the functions of the junior Senate, under the able guidance of Mrs, Ashley, and the first profit making play, Ever Since Eve, were successful high points of the year. We timidly entered senior high school with a feeling of respect for such studies as Latin, and a feeling of accomplislnnent at progressing so far with relatively little mishap. Ninth grade ushered in more enthusiastic freshmen. To the pleasure of the coaching staff, a rather large fellow was seen romping through the halls with his hrst year al- gebra and Latin books tucked under his atlas-like arms. This modern Goliath went by the surname of Colvin but was immediately hailed as Big john. The anticipation of a strong line didn't end with john, for all the ninth grade newcomers were highly rated football material. joe Hart was a good bet for center, jerry Roach promised to be a speedy guard, Bob Salisbury could 611 in at tackle along with Bob Heintzelmang and Ed Kress seemed probable to hold down the end position. Concy Ryan was the only feminine addition to our first year in senior high. ln the sophomore year, our progress in athletics was developing readily, Miler Tom Burris joined our increasing throng, obtaining promin- ence the next year by being elected junior class president. Also Elaine Domke came and soon as- pired to teach the eager sophomore girls the trick of mastering a four-wheeled vehicle. Simultan- eously, Clyde Morton purred into the parking lot with his dual exhaust. Clubs played an important part in making us feel a little more at home in senior high. As :mother indication of the drama- tic ability of the dramatics club, Dorothy Allaben was vested with the presidency in her senior year. We were brought to our senses when we found ourselves near the end of the road. Many of us wished to call back the previous years so as to get another chance at working a little harder for the forth-coming college reconnnendations. The class of '52, not to be at a loss for something to do, plunged into the junior play, and long practices, grease paint smudges, depleted house-hold furnish- ings, and a final success, were earmarks of Up To Your Ears. Continually our membership multi- plied. Our junior year added janice Kinkema, who upheld the old adage that gentlemen prefer blondes. Elaine Miller's friendly attitude and jackie Renhult's quiet, but capable manner added to the character of the class. Cliff Herold and Henry McCandliss combined their knowledge to become walking source books on naval technology and any information of a mechanical nature. An eager candidate was greeted at the beginning of our senior year. Fred Altman's service interest in the extra-curricular activities and his willingness to help behind the scenes of the senior play were greatly appreciated. Dick Campbell, presiding over the Student Council, showed what progress could be made by allowing greater freedom in student government. The difficult position of editor-in- chief of the lHfffTf0I'fl67I was awarded to janette Hickey, whose editorial ability and hard work proved valuable in publishing a highly successful yearbook. The Night of january lfith. was acclaimed the play of plays by various adept critics, it was a hnan- cial and dramatic sensation as a result of the back- ing of the entire class. Whole-hearted co-operation was also revealed in the annual magazine sale. The many senior activities made the months fly by, and soon we were filing down the aisle to the strains of, Pomp and Circumstancef' We all appeared a bit reminiscentg some of us looked back on that kin- dergarten arch and realized that it was just one of many arches over a long, long path.
