Few years in East's history have been marked hy such overwhelming superiority upon the cinder paths. Although competing with an extremely small squad. East was able to walk off with laurels galore. They started their trophy quest hy taking the Class B Regional crown, then added the State Meet the following week. and walked off with the Grand Valley Conference championship in their third hig week-end. Our opening triumph in the regionals gave definite indication that East would he a strong force in the state track meet. Victory. however. was not easily achieved. as we barely nosed out Hastings. The highlight of the regionals was the exceptional performance turned in hy lloh Swain. who walked off with three hrsts and ran anchor on the winning relay team. His time of l0.ll flat in the century shaved .2 of a second off the existing state record. A good share of firsts and seconds was also turned in hy other lvoys, Winning the state meet was a real feat. for our l'ioneers were up against the licst competition in Nliehigan, Swain again showed his heels to his competitors in lnoth the ltltl and 220. taking lvoth races and also l2 xalualile points, ,lim 'lliller placed third in the llill-yard dash. and liud Poisson tied for fourth in the pole-vault to round out our scoring upon the field. Behind 5 19 'ol points as the meet swung into the last event. lfast pulled victory out of the hag hy winning the relay in fine fashion. By doing so. East was able to nose out Ypsilanti Central. hy l5f6-l of a point. The winning relay team was composed of Jim Miller. Don Kranenberg. Tim Gilmore. and Bob Swain. The season was climaxed the following week hy our taking a second straight Grand Valley cup. .-is state champions. we were expected to walk away with the meet. This. however, was not true. for Wyoming Park came within a few points of upsetting the dope-wagon. East hcgan the l945 season with a nearly nnlreatalrle track team - -nearly all our point- winners returning from last season. Among these lwoys were Holi Swain, Jim Nliller. Holy l.ee. and Dave Boland for the dashes: lfrank lfderle for his special- ty. the lwroad jump. and also tht- hurdles: Don Kranenlverg in 3,1 wi M the 110: and Jack Balls and Keith lflark in the ! Furthering the enjoyment of music in everyday life is the purpose of Sigma Delta. music and social club for girls. The Sigma Delts have assumed the responsi- bility for changing the records in the juke-box, pre- senting music assemblies. and helping Miss Camp- bell and Mr. Sleet in various musical activities. The social activities included a swimming party with dinner afterwards. and a coke party at the home of Joy Kindel following a symphony concert.
