Enrollment Down As Cuts Hit Choirs ECONOMIC curtailments forced the cancelation of two choir classes this year: only the Concert choir re- mained as a performing vocal group. Under the direction of lVlr. Al Marco, also serving as East Detroit's band director for the 13th year, the singers presented two concerts. The first was the an- nual Christmas concert which included solo, ensemble, and full choir compositions, as well as instrumental numbers. The second concert was scheduled for lVlay as part of the Fine Arts festival. ln addition, the choir planned to take part in the District and Solo and Ensemble festivals, after a lapse of one year. As in past years, the choir was also sche- duled to perform at the various Commencement acti- vities in June. Because students were allowed only five class con- tacts this year for credit, some members of the choir joined on a voluntary basis and are not receiving credit. Last year 250 students enrolled in choral classes. This year the total was approximately 50, X W r1 x 44-: T s timely' N ':-in-.,,, -J , V, ,v, MM, ,ei-iv.-J XX f 1 X .. WORKING in the school library gives South American exchange stu- dents, Jose Rocha and Ariel Sardas an opportunity to exchange ideas. EXCHANGE students from Holland, Frank and Philip S teller, watch the basketball team win another game, Exchange Students Add Foreign Flavor FOUR exchange students from the Netherlands, Brazil, and Uruguay added a foreign touch to the halls of East Detroit high this year. Frank and Philip Steller from Amersfoort, Holland, were invited to stay with the Porter family of East Detroit. Their older brother, Braum, was an exchange student here in 1965-66. The twins found EDHS much larger than the one they attended in Europe. One difference they noted was the fact that in Holland the students did not get to choose their courses, however, they did choose the school they wished to attend. South Americans Ariel Sardas from Montevideo, and Jose Rocha from Rio de Janeiro, enrolled in EDHS for the second semester. Jose is a sophomore and Ariel is a senior who will graduate with the Class of 1969. The boys are sponsored by the Youth For Under- standing program. Each of the boys expressed an appreciation of the friendly, helpful students attending EDHS. They have also shown an interest in, and' have taken part in the many extracurricular events offered at the school: These foreign ambassadors plan to return to their homelands at the close of the school year and will take with them fond memories and many friendships. Stu- dents of EDHS will also remember the many contribu- tions made by these exchange students who made at- tending East Detroit high a more enjoyable adventure in 1969. 21
