ENCOURA GIN G fans at Memorial field, varsity cheerleaders Linda Vesey and Julie Dalak lead cheers for the East Detroit gridders. EDHS Cheerleaders Create Team Spirit BOASTING the largest and one of the best cheer- leading squads in the state, East Detroit high has the trophy to prove it. The 14-girl squad attended a state-wide cheerlead- ing camp this summer in Hartland, lVlich., sponsored by Michigan State university. The girls brought home four first place ribbons awarded them for their cheers. skits, and routines. The squads were judged on overall quality and from this judging the EDHS squad took the third place trophy. This year's squad was expanded in an effort to give more girls the opportunity of becoming cheerleaders. Originally some 105 girls turned up at practice, 60 of whom entered the actual tryouts. Judges made a final selection of 14 girls based more on enthusiasm and sparkle than on skills, ln addition to cheering and organizing pep meetings the squad painted banners announcing the games. TENSE expressions show in the faces of Roberta Williams, Lora Bruder, Nancy Meyer, and Brenda Coldwell at the Grosse Pointe game. 17
