Lone Win Fails To Dampen Spirit VARSITY football suffered a setback this year as East Detroit ended the Eastern Michigan league season with a record of no wins and six losses. and an over all season record of one win and eight defeats. The Shamrocks registered their only victory against the Roseville Wildcats. a traditional rival, in a decisive 19 to T romp. Although they had a losing season the Shams played good ball especially in their last few games. They lost two games by one touchdown and the Homecoming game by only two points. Several of the lrish squad played outstanding ball during the season. The quarterback slot was amply filled by Bill NlacGillivray who surprised many by being as good a receiver as he was a passer. Coach Larry Hartsig introduced a halfback to quarterback pass that clicked many times. This was not the only complicated play that was trickily used by the varsity boys this year. The spread formation was used frequently and clicked twice for Tiles. On this play the tackle becomes eligible to receiyc a pass and Dennis Kline and Ben Trombat were two tackles who scored touchdowns this year. The fullback position was shared equally by three players. Leon Zdan. who did most of the outstanding punting for the Shams. Dave Kowalski. and Ray Minervini. Kowalski also filled in at the halfhack spot for Dick lckes who suffered a dislocated elbow at mid-season. The other half of the backfield was spearheaded by sophomore Bob Nlarasco who tied with lckes for the best running average on the team. Varsity letters were awarded to 3-1 gridders. and l3 will return to holster next vear's squad. ' 1 '18 CHECKING with coach Larry Hartsig, quarterback Hill Slac- Cillivray carries another play into the game. Bill. along with Hay Nlinerxini. served as co-captains of the team and were also selected by the coaches as Most Valuable Players.
