During this, his first season as head baseball mentor, Coach Smith led the Bucs to a Dis- trict 26 Championship, a Southern Regional Cham- pionship, and a third place in the N.A.I.A. Finals. The 1963 season was a good one for the Pi- rates, with wins over such powerful teams as Wake Forest, Ithaca, Colgate, and Southern nois. As Southern Regional Champions, the Bucs went to St. Joseph, Missouri, for the N.A.I. A. finals. Three All-State seniors are on this team: Lacy West, Carlton Barns, and Tommy Kidd. Lacy West was also named All-American.
