CONGRATULATIONS UPON YOUR GRADUATION Although you have reached your goal and made your dreams come true, new spheres of endeavor lie ahead. Today, you are standing on the threshold of a world that is restless with fear and turmoil. It is our sincere wish that you may face forward with un- faltering courage and a faith which will surrnount every impending obstacle. To this end we wish you success and happiness in the plans you cherish most. W. B. Goddard l7l TO THE SENIORS One of the best definitions of common sense is given by Stowe, who says: '4It is the knack of seeing 'things as they are and doing things as they should be done. Most people who are credited with rare judgment have merely de- veloped the gift of common sense. Practical common sense can be infinite- ly more valuable than a most elaborate university education. In fact every ounce of learning needs a pound of common sense to apply it. May each member of the Class of '51 use this gift in future years. DONALD J. We are going to brag a little, of course, because prophecies very seldom come true. This class of 1951 will turn out some great Amer- icans, we prophesy. Watch Broadway, radio, and television. Members of our class are very talented. History? We are going to turn out at least one far above average historian. But, most important, we'll turn out proud citizens. Medicine? We will have plenty of surgeons who will be men of character and keen ability. We could give the names but they'll make good without a boost from here. Science? The world will know all it needs to about cancer, polio, and arthritis in a few years, because we have some great scientists coming up. Home Economics? Some of the world's finest dress designers and best home makers will be graduated this year. Law? Perhaps there will be one or two in the supreme court. These men will safeguard the rights of their fellow men. Education? We are going to turn out many teachers and professors, who will devote themselves to one of the most important professions in our country, the education of future generations. Engineering? A field we can safely enter. Engi- neers are the builders and designers of tomorrow. Journalism? We are in! Our journalists will keep the world up on all happenings. Business? We will turn out a few executives and many small business men. Industry? There will be a few capitalists and many employees, who will not shirk but give a full measure of service. Theater? We'll have a great supply of actors and actresses. There may be an Angie, a Jack, or even a Tony, We could go on and on but whatever the class of 1951 gives to life in any field, the most important thing is being a good citizen. This is more im- portant than Broadway or Television. There may be a few disappointments but we hope the assets will outnumber the liabilities. Marilyn Heakin Ass't. We find, on our arrival at school this bright September morning, that 8A and 8B have been combined in the main Study Hall to make one big happy class of 9th graders. We see, to our pleasure, that Mrs. Ryder and Miss Gilcrist are our home room sponsors. Our first class meeting was for the purpose of electing our class officers. They are Bill Bosler, presidentg Bill Dana, vice president, Mary Kreitzer, secretaryg and Teresa Paumier, treasurer. The Christmas party, held in the high school auditorium was the main event this year. Our money raising project was collecting tax stamps. Class enrollment: Betty Adler, Bernard Ake, Ann Barnes, Dorothy Barnes, Glenn Bates, James Beck, Don Bennett, Bill Bosler, Ina Brunner, Patty Bryan, Dan Calendine, Rosalee Clapper, Mary Curren, Norma Dahlheimer, Bill Dana, Eileen Davis, Dan Decker, Delores Mae Dobransky, Dolores Rose Dobransky, Nancy Dougherty, Elsa Fornasiero, John Geyer, Dora Gooding, Troy Hannah, Betty Haubert, Marilyn Heakin, Fred Jacob, Frances Jones, Clayton Kehl, Mary Kreitzer, Betty Kryder, Herbert Linhart, Marilyn Mason, Bob McNichol, Edgar McNutt, J acquita McNutt, Delores Meyer, Dale Miller, Grace Moore, Nancy Muckley, Jack Newlin, Betty Ober- ster, Teresa Paumier, David Pribula, Donald Pribula, Ovidio Pugnale, Polly Reynolds, Joanne Robinson, Bob Rothacher, Doris Rusher, Betty Shepler, Richard Singhaus, Neal Smith, Richard Snively, Junior Snyder, Darrell Stinchcomb, John Stocker, Loretta Teis, George Vincent, Walter Vin- cent, Herbie Walters, Dale Wardle, Leroy Westfall, Ella Williams, and Genevieve Yoerns. Moving on to our Sophomore year, we find our- selves in 203 with Mrs. Moulton. To increase our treasury we collected tax stamps again and elected as our class officers: Bill Bosler, president, Bill Dana, vice-president, Mary Kreitzer, secretary, and Herbert Linhart, treasurer. We lost exactly 24 members in the 10th grade. They were: Bemard Ake, Norma Dahlheimer, Eileen Davis, Dan Decker, Nancy Dougherty, John Geyer, Dora Gooding, Troy Hannah, Edgar McNutt, Jacquita McNutt, Dolores Meyer, Nancy Muckley, Jack Newlin, Doris Rusher, Richard Singhaus, Neal Smith, Richard Snively, Loretta Teis, George Vincent, Walter Vincent, Herbie Walters, Ella Williams, and Genevieve Yoerns. It wasn't a total loss because Jean Bower from Canton, Dwain Knepper from Indiana, George Thiel from Carrollton, Delores Winkler from Tal- madge and Ray Douglas joined us. Under the careful guidance of Mr. Keeler, we start our Junior year. We know that it will be a hard and busy year. We raised money this year by having two magazine drives, selling refreslunents at home basketball games, selling candy in the l19l cafeteria at noontime, selling shirts, head scarfs, beanies, seats, etc. Our Junior class play, We Shook The Family Tree, was a great success. The Junior-Senior Prom, which was financed by the Juniors, was held at the Alliance Country Club on May 13, 1950. We elected as our officers: Herbert Linhart, president, Mary Kreitzer, vice president, Joanne Robinson, secretary, and John Stocker, treasurer. We were sorry to have Don Bennett, Mary Curren, Delores Mae Dobransky, Ray Douglas, Dwain Knepper, Dale Miller and George Thiel leave us this year, but were glad to welcome Evelyn Eakin from Canton South, Betty Gearin from Waynesburg, Ronald Price from Canton, Rich Snively, who re- turned from Florida, and Bob Coss. And now, still under the guidance of Mr. Keeler, we come to the happiest, yet most regretful year of all. We are happy and proud because we are seniors and have more privileges and excitement. We are somewhat unhappy and regretful because we know that it will be the last time for everything we do, and we now realize just how much fun we've had in the past twelve years that is gone from us forever except for the memories. We also know that we have an exciting life ahead of us. We lost five members this year. Betty Adler, Dolores Winkler, and Fred Jacob preferred matri- mony. Clayton Kehl and Richard Snively moved out of town, making our class enrollment 39. To lead us in our big year we elected as class officers: Ovidio Pugnale, presidentg Mary Kreitzer, vice-president, Ina Brunner, secretaryg and Herbert Linhart, treasurer. Our project this year is to raise money to publish the 1951 annual and finance our class trip. Selling candy and ice cream in the cafeteria at noontime, selling Christmas cards, sponsoring square dances with the Juniors, and presenting our class play, Seventeenth Summer which was an even greater success than last year's, were the chief means of reaching our goal. The anxious members of the Senior class left for their trip to Washington on May 7, 1951. Commence- ment exercises were held on May 24, 1951. We, the class of 51 owe many thanks to Mr. Keeler, our sponsor, for his leadership and patience, to Miss Taylor for supervising the 1951 annual, to Mr. Goddard for his guidance through our twelve years of school, and to all the teachers for their understanding. We are now going into the big wide world on our own. But no matter what we do nor where we go, we will always remember these wonderful days, shared by the class of 1951, at East Canton High School, forever. SOPHOMORE CLASS The sophomore class is proud of its scholastic record and hopes to maintain it. There are ten members in the National Honor Society, and the class is well represented in other clubs. The essays of Carmen Mathis, Betty Jean Linhart, and Howard Mark were submitted in the American Legion Essay Contest. The annual Christmas Party held on December 19, was centered around the snow queen, who was Jo Ann Eddy. Her attendants were Wanda Bland, Patricia Gerer, Evelyn Oberly, and Yvonne Veit. They were chosen by a vote of the class. Round and square dancing, and a gift exchange furnished the evening's entertainment. The sophomore class wishes to thank Mrs. Ryder and Mrs. Norris, the sponsors, for their special guidance throughout the year. l25l SOPHOMORE GIRLS lst Row: Betty Linliart. One of Coach Parker Schafer's headaches was a total of only fifteen candidates when fall practice began. Among these were quite a few freshmen. In spite of these disadvantages, the team did not become discouraged but practiced faithfully and scored against every opponent except Middlebranch. For their fighting spirit, these boys are to be congratulated. 1950 FOOTBALL nsconn nate Team, Ecns orrs September 9 .......... .......... They held a record of 12 wins and 3 losses throughout the season. In the tournament they received the Championship Trophy and the Repository Rotating Trophy, which is in their possession for the second time. BASKETBALL HISTORY Holding the advantage of an experienced team and exceptional height, East Canton finished the 1950-51 season with a record of 10 wins to 3 defeats. Under the coaching of Mr. Richard Keeler, the team enjoyed a successful season, only being defeated by East Sparta, Waynesburg, and Beach City. A record of one win and two defeats was posted in the tournament. 4 Ovidio Pugnale, winner of Class B all-county berth, was sidelined by appendicitis near the end of the season.
