p 4 N IDN I-I THE SPIRIT llf Pubhshed by the Seruor Class of EIARLHAM HIGH SCI-IC Elarlham Iowa 'S Nations Slllmulg AIIMI ISIIIAIIU The primary concern of American education today is to cultivate in he largest number of our future citizens an appreciation both of the responsi bilities and the benefits which come to them because they are American and free James F Hemphill Principal Are you ready for tomorrow ? Tomorrow can mean a great era of exciting adventure in outer space, a wonderful world of new and useful inventions better than the unbelievable things we already have, a blissful world of peace and general well- being On the other hand it can be an era of distrust and hate a world full of horrible ways of killing masses of people an age of contin ous wars and brutality What happens will depend on the youth of free countries Young people in the free countries of the world must be educated to carry the banners of tolerance love and peace to the rest of the world To make a better future for yourself and to prepare to help others in your world be sure that you are mak1ng the most of today Your school offers each student a chance to study various subjects to help in future living You also have opportunities to participate 1n many activities designed to make you a better leader and more tolerant person Your tomorrow will be the result of your actions today Can we count on you to build a better world '7 Mr C Arthur Hansen Superlntendent 'Q' 1 , - I 1 v I 1 ffm 1. HISHIIIY Thrrteen years ago around the last of February, 1941, twenty three youngsters, w1th an a1r of great rmportance, began therr formal educatron Ten of these Terence Byrne, Charles Cassrdy Allen Goeldner Ruby Golrghtly, Larry Jacobson, Myrna Mapes, Sherry Prrce Sally Standmg, Patrrcra Westphal, and John Crawford after twelve years of studyrng and amusement wrll get therr drplomas from good old EHS Even though Sally Standmg d1dn't come back Ph1ll1p Brown and Jean Adams were here to take her place M1ss Brlney was our beloved teacher The paste must have had some added flavorrng by the way we ate rt Yum yuml Allen Goeldner frnally remembered not to say Hey Mom, but to say Mrs Goeldner durmg school ume Oran Clements Wayne Thrarlkrll Jomed us Jean Adams drsappeared durmg the summer and d1dn't come back The second semester Carl Merrcal Jorned us We sure had fun puttrng on our Chrrstmas play Our newcomers are Marlm Brtttarn, Mary Alrce Conrad, Wrlma Nltchals and our twrns, Wrlma and Wayne Douglas We had lost Larry Jacobson The twms drdn t stay long they moved to De Soto, February I8 1943 Mrss Mleynek must have been fond of us because she 15 gomg on to fourth grade wrth us Boy these are good turnrps Besrdes the basket of turnrps Mrss Mleynek made us some very good popcorn balls w1th nuts Yummmmmmm John Westphal and Harold brought new excrtement to our class Sally Standrng came back but left after the frrst semester The new face rn ftfth grade rs Ruby Leeper from Prtzer We were noted for belng ornery but Mrs Olson soon took that out of us Sally came back at the last of the year John Chase Jomed our carefree class and Larry Jacobson came back from DeSoto wrth a rubber band 1n h1S hand Wrlma and Wayne Douglas came back We mrssed our recesses at f1rst We soon got used to havmg more than one teacher Durmg thrs seventh year of school we gamed Margaret Gonseth and Merrlyn Danley Wrlrna Nrtchals re enrolled rn our class We now have arrrved at what we have been lookrng for, erghth grade graduatron Our motto was Clrmbrng to Success flower was whrte carnauon, and colors were blue and srlver B111 Benson came the second semester, Oran Clements came then also We have ventured to the thrrd floor to be green freshres Nothrng outstandrng happened to us durmg the frrst two years of our Hrgh School Durmg the Sophomore year Jean Adams came from DeSoto to Jorn our class agarn Fmally we were all promoted to Juniors That year we had the Junror and Semor Banquet at Younkers Tea Room rn Des Mornes J umors presented a play called Junror Prom , opemng nrght was October 30, 1951 Last day of school party was beld out at John Westphals north farm We ate supper rn the trmber, after the party broke up we all splrt up and went where ever we wanted too, more fun We frnally became seniors, slow but sure There wasn t too much gorng on the frrst part of the year We elected offrcers, the boys overruled the grrls, we had all boy offrcers November 4 we all had our glamorous graduatron prctures taken We recreved them near Chrrstmas Everyone must of been satrsfred, there wasn t any complaints We started plannrng drfferent ways to rarse money for drfferent acuvltres that we were gorng to have throughout the year December came, we started talkrng about our slap day Everyone was thrnkrng of excrung and educauonal places to go We frnally came up wtth Chrcago It was voted on by the class and passed Next came the red tape The class had to get all the parents srgnatures and school boards permrssron A few had to twist theu parents arms, but they suc ceeded. The brggest problem rn all the school and semor class was to rarse enough money to go on the skrp day. Our plans were to have a couple of projects throughout the year, wlth our Annual Sales and Semor play we should have enough money to charter a bus and lodgrng expenses for skrp day. Our class colors, S11ver and Red . Flower is 'Amerrcan Beauty Rose . Our class motto, 'The past forever gone, the future strll our own. We have now ended our Senror year with lots of fun and work.
