E. M. Hou' COMMUNITY May 12, 1951 Dear Reader. SENIOR HISTORY Four years ago on a beautiful day in September, we entered E. M. Holt High School as bright and confident freshmen, fifty-three strong. In about five minutes we were hopelessly confused by the strangeness of it all. Soon we settled down to a routine of jumping when the bell rang and organized our class, electing for our officers Jerry Lowder, president: Betty Vann Lloyd, vice-presidentg Hedrick Isley, secretary and Boyd Boswell, treasurer. Our motto proclaimed, We will climb to the top till the bells we ring , our colors were red and white: our flower. the red rose. Jerry Lowder and Howard Coble represented us in the student council. Our advisers, Wilton C. Hawkins and Mrs. A. D. Kinnett, helped us with our problems, suffered through an assembly program in which the curtains were ruined, and supervised our many class parties: one at Rebecca Garrett's home, one in Zane Well's yard, one at the Alamance Club Houseg and one at Jerry's home. Jenny Overman, Peggy Stout, Franklin Robertson, and Bur- leigh Capps were our May Day attendants, and Jerry represented us at the junior-senior banquet. The rest of us could only look at the beautiful cafeteria and long to be a little older. One step higher-sophomores-we were no longer timid, and we looked down our noses at freshmen who acted lost. There were forty-seven of us nowg our advisers were Charles P. Farmer and Mrs. Robert W. Philbeckg offi- cers for the year were Hedrick. presidentg Jerry, vice-president, Patsy Fox, secretary, and Jenny, treasurer. Hed- rick, Boyd, and Jerry represented us in the student council. We changed our motto to We may not always be right. but we're never wrong. We had several partiesg one at Zane's, at which we forgot the games and the candy: one at Frances Alexander's. where we stumbled around a dark yard looking for Herbert Branchg Christmas par- ties at school. At one Mr. Farmer bought so much food we nearly died trying to eat it ally and the other parties at Jenny's pond, Lashley's pond, and Doris Jean Shaw's home. On a hot day in May, though the sun was blinding, we did not notice, for we were staring at Jenny, Kathryn McPherson, Burleigh, and Dean Patterson in the May Court. We were represented by Burleigh at the junior-senior banquet that year. The next year we were all together with Mrs. W. Ira Lee as our long suffering adviser: Howard Coble, presi- dent: Hedrick, vice-president, Betty Vann, secretary, and Patsy, treasurer as officers of our class of forty-one members. We entered into junior activities with enthusiasm, and after a strenuous magazine campaign, found that we had broken all previous records by selling 31,049.00 worth of magazines. Rebecca Garrett, Phyllis Smith, Hed- rick. and Frances represented us in the student council. The wire cutting nearly brought all activities to a dead halt, and it seemed that we would never get our class rings ordered, but we finally managed to agree on one. Turn- ing our attention to the banquet, we chose as our theme Hitch Your Wagon To a Star, and, at the risk of bragging, we think the theme was carried out beautifully. Silver stars Filled the candle lit cafeteria and the auditorium where we danced afterward. Monday, April 24. we left for Washington, D. C., after a year of hoping and planning. Even though Jerry lost his shoes and Ena Ruth her breakfast en route, we arrived there safely, and standing beneath the great dome of the Capitol, we realized just how wonderful a country is ours. In 1950 we became seniors with Mrs. W. Albert Graham as our adviser. The motto that we chose last year was still with us, and we firmly believed that Conduct and courage lead to honor. Franklin Robertson, presi- dent: Boyd. vice-president, Frances, secretary: and Hedrick, treasurer were our officers this year, Rebecca Garrett, Jerry, Howard Coble, Franklin, and Boyd represented us in the student council. Work started on the annualg one day all the seniors stayed in town canvassing the merchants for ads. Rebecca Garrett, Frances Alexander, Shirley Fonville and Mrs. Graham attended the State Press Conference at Chapel Hill trying to learn how. Time is Flying for us, in these last nine months we shall alternately freeze and yell at football games, sing notes in glee club that are just so purty, cram nervously for examinations, attend a Shakespearean play, go to class parties, present our senior play. attend our last junior-senior banquet, and realize that soon we shall don caps and gowns and receive our diplomas-the goal of these twelve years.
