His major function is that of the Administrative Head of the Ship. The XO is also the Chief Navigator, responsible for the safe navigation of the ship. As if these duties aren't enough he is also the Personnel Officer in charge of the everyday affairs of the ship such as: Musters, cleanliness, leave and liberty and various other tasks. LCDR. L. A. CUERONI Executive Officer LCDR Cueroni started his naval career at the Massachusetts Maritime Academy, graduating in the class of l955 . He then sailed as Third Officer in the Merchant Marine on freighters and passenger liners, His next duty station was the USS WRANGELL QAE-l2J as Communications Officer. After leavingthe WHANCELL he went to the USS NIPMUC KATE-1573 to serve as Executive Officer. Serving as an instructor at the Communications School prior to being a student of the Naval Destroyer School in Newport, LCDH Cueroni reported to his next duty aboard the USS BROWNSON IDD-8683, as Operations and Engineering Officer. He next served on COMUSMACV Staff, Saigon, before attending the Naval War College, and finally reporting to the DYESS in JULY 1968. -M

I y A Anative of Norwich, Connecticut, CDBWilliam C. SEIVIPLE III, USN, graduatedfromNorthwestern University with a Bachelor of Science degree in 1951 and was commissioned out of OCS in 1953. I-Iis initial assignment was as an elec- tronics maintenance officer in the GCAprogran1. This was followed by tours on board USS BARTON QDD-7225 as Operations Officer and Navigator and on board USS PROVIDENCE QCLG-61 with the precommissioning detail and subsequently as First Lieutenant. Following a tour in the Bureau of Naval Personnel in the Officer Promotions Division, CDB SEIVIPLE served as Operations Officer, COIVIDESBON 22 and as Executive Officer of the USS DUPONT CDD-9415. Postgraduate education was at the Defense Intelligence School in Washington D. C. Prior to being ordered to command DYESS, CDB SEIVIPLE served on the Joint Staff, United States Military Assistance Cornrnand, Vietnam, as the China- Spain - Thailand Plans Officer. CDB SEMPLE is married to the former Nancy Ann Armstrong of EL Paso, Texas and has two children, Norah age 9 and William age 7.

- OPERATIONS . a . 531. L Q' ' 'S l x 9 LT DOW is a graduate of the US Naval Academy, Olass of 1964. I-Ie reported Aboard the USS BOSTON ICAO-it for his first tour at sea. He then completed the Naval Destroyer School in 1966 prior to reporting aboard DYESS as Operations Officer. During this 1969 MED Cruise LT Dow departed DYESS for a tour of duty aboard the USS FIRM KIVISO-4441 as its Executive Officer. LT DOW I I I I I y LTJG Pitman former OIC Officer 1 served as interin Operations Officer until the end of the cruise, at Which time he left DYESS to be attached to COM- OORTRON 8 as a Staff Officer. LT Pierce, a former white hat, came to DYESS from the AAW 9 Training Oenter in San Diego, where he served as an Electronic Warfare Instructor. LT Pierce has had previous Destrolyer Duty on the SS HANINER Q D-7181.
