,z .AI mill Engineering ' '2 LT Benson was commissioned through the OCS program in 1961 and reported aboard the USS TIOGA COUNTY ILST-ll58I as Communications Officer and subsequently Operations Officer. This initial sea tour was followed by duty on the OCS Staff. The next two years were spent at the Naval Postgraduate School in the Naval Engineering Curriculum. Our jobs are wide and varied. They range from standing helm watches to firing the guns, with just about everything between thrown in to add some spice. The main job of our division is ship keeping. On this med cruise the praise from such people as Adm. Healy, Com Cru Des Flot 6, USDAO Rome, Com Des Div l22, C. O. USS FISKE and C. O. USS TIDEWATER atest to the fine job done by the whole division. Training for this cruise started many months prior to our departure. The two months spent at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba took a green Deck Force and gave us the Fundamentals of Deck Seamanship. The Med gave us a chance to use our knowledge of Unrep and Vertrep Etc. and put a fine polish on them. Whether a career regular or deck seaman reserve we'll never forget our part in drone Recovery, Gun Shoots, Pilot rescue and hectic port entries.
