JusT prior To serving wiTh mllincpac, CDR MEAD had over Three sTraighT years of sea duTy. EirsT, in SepTember of l96l he wenT aboard 7,lldSS WADl.ElGl'l CDD-6895 as ExecuTive Officer. During ThaT Time The WADl.ElOl-l, an ATlanTic desTroyer, was eployed To The NorTh Sea wiTh a sTriking force for The Berlin Crisis. l.aTer on, in mid - l96.'2, The Then LCDR .,?g955iEAD received orders To Rearl l-larbor To Take command of USS Wll.l-lOlTE QDER-397l. One of The Wll.l-lOlTE'S filirimary duTies was To serve in NorThern Pacific barrier air defense paTrols. ' Tw' During World War ll,CDR MEAD served as OM2 aboard The USS l'lUl.l. CDD-3505 and afTer receiving a commis- alloion as Ensign USNR, served on The USS RC-800 unTil The end of The war. AfTer compleTing undergraduaTe arid 1w Schools, he reTurned To The Navy during The Korean conflicT and served as CommunicaTions Officer aboard lSS LEARY CDDR-879D making Two Trips To The MediTerranean. l-le laTer served on USS COLLETT CDD-73Ol irsT as Gunnery Officer and Then as OperaTions Officer. During ThaT Time The COl.l.E'l'T made Two deploymer1TS o The WesTern Pacific. Following This Tour of duTy he was ordered To The USS HARVESON CDER-flfil 05 fxecuTive Officer. ln V959 he received orders To The EasT CoasT again, where he became parT of The Umm' 2sTraTive STaff of The Naval War College. CDR and Mrs. MEAD were boTh born in ConnecTicuT. They were married There in The ciTy of STGWB' -fi V947 ind now have Two children, Jeffrey age l8 and STacey age 8. Though underway over 7573 of The Time, uniTs of The squadron only rarely operaTed TogeTher. RaTher, They were employed separaTely on such diverse duTies as planeguarding Tor aTTacl4 carriers, conducTing search-and rescue operaTions, acTing as picl4eT ships on Tar-Tlung sTaTions deep in The Tonkin Gulf, and carrying ouT highly successful gunfire-supporT missions in The SouTh. In lvlay l96-41 he was Transferred To Naval Nuclear Rower School, Bainbridge, Md., and on lo Novemberj i964 he reporTed To Nuclear Power Training UniT, WesT Milfon SiTe, SchenecTady, N.Y. for addiTional Training. On l7 May i965 he was deTached from Nuclear Rower Training UniT and Transferred To DYESS reporTing on board 5 June i965 for his second Tour as Execufive Officer. This Time, however, The DYESS had been Trans- V UVVTIS InTO O PRAM l ASW aesfroyer.
