Emmons, USN is a native of .Meridian, Mississippi and graduated from the U. S. Naval Academy December 19, 1941. His first tour of duty was spent aboard the U. 'S. S. TEXAS .CBB-351 Where he served from January 1942 until August 1945. During this time he was a Junior Dlvision Oflicer, Turret Ofiicer, Electrical Oiiicer, and Senior Assistant Engineer Officer. From September 1945 until August 1948 he was aboard the U. S. S. COLUMBUS CCA-743 where he performed duties as Senior Assistant Engineer and as Engineer Officer. After this tour of sea duty Lieutenant Commander Emmons went to shore duty in September 1948 Where he spent two years in the Bureau of Ships. From November 1950 until J une 1951 he was at the Guided Missile School at Fort Bliss, Texas. On 15 September 1951 he reported aboard the DYESS as Executive Officer. Lieutenant Commander Emmons holds the Commendation Ribbon, American Defense, American Area, European,-Afr1can:Middle East Area Campaign Cthree starsl, Asiatic-Pacific Area Campaign Ctwo starsj, World War II Victory, Naval Occupation Service, Phillipine Liberation and China Service Medals. '7:7 ' 6 --' NN BIOGRAPHY OF COMMANDIN G OFFICER U. S. S. DYESS KDDR-8801 Commander John E. DACEY, USN was born' in Biloxi, Mississippi, September 14, 1916, and graduated from the U. S. Naval Academy June 2, 1938. . His first duty assignments were on board the U. S. S. NEVADA and the U. S. S. SOMERS. During 1941-42 he was Flag Lieutenant to Commander Battle Force Pacific Fleet. His next assignment was Assistant Gunnery Oflicer of the U. S. S. BIRMINGHAM in 1942-43. CDR DACEY was Flag Secretary to Deputy Commander in Chief Pacific Fleet and to Commander South Pacific in 1943-44, and after this tour of duty he was transferred to the U. S. S. OKLAHOMA CITY, where he was Navigator and Operations Officer. In 1946-47 he attended the U. S. Naval Post Graduate School. He received a Master of Science degree in physics from Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1949. Other tours of duty Were: military staff member of Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory C1949-501 3 Staff member of Scientific Task Group CJTF-31 during Greenhouse atomic tests at Eniwetok 1195153 OPNAV Division of Atomic Energy 11951-529. On November 22, 1952, he assumed command of the U. S. S. DYESS KDDR-8801. He was on board the U. S. S. CALIFORNIA in Pearl Harbor during the Japanese attack, and in 1943 he participated in the invasion of Sicily on board the U. S.S. BIRMINGHAM. In the U. S. S. OKLAHOMA CITY he saw action against Japan in 1945 with Task Force 38 and Task Force 58. CDR DACEY holds the Commendation Ribbon, American Defense, Asiatic-Pacific Theatre, Euro- pen-African Theatre, World War II Victory, and Naval Occupation Uapanj medals. He was promoted to the rank of Commander November 5, 1945. ' CDR DACEY has done post graduate work in nuclear physics, atomic energy and ordnance engi- neering. He is a member of the Society of Sigma XI fHonorary Scientificj, American Physical Society, and American Institute of Physics.
