BOARD OF EDUCATION The Board of Education is el ec ted by the people of the community to provide for the education of all the youth. Board members are elected on a non-political basis and serve without pay. The Board exercises legislative and iudicial functions in making provision for the necessary building, teachers, and equipment. The superintendent serves as the Board's executive officer and professional adviser. The consistency with which our public schools have fostered American traditions and our American concept of a government of free men is a tribute to the thousands of school board members who have functioned under local autonomy while preserving national unity. 17 MARY G.
