A great deal of water has passed under the bridge since then, but surpris- ingly enough l've been able to keep in contact with nearly all of my former classmates. l thought perhaps you might be interested in hearing something about them. I am also sending you a picture album which I made after I returned from South America a year ago. As you probably remember, l attended the XVorld Reconstruction Confer- ence at Reo de Janeiro as a correspondent from the New York llemld-Tiiizcx. Another famous foreign correspondent tincidentally a former classmatel, Elea- nor Hayes, attended the conference with me. Un the first page of the album is a picture of the C'ur'iliIn'a, the famous South American liner which has broken all speed records with its super Diesel engines. especially designed by the 1945 Nobel Prize winner, Gilbert Kamm. I under- stand he now has a new assistant who graduated with me in 1943. Ray Cassady is his name. 'llhe events of that trip are still quite vivid in my mind, and I've been able to recall a great many of them after re-reading the diary which I kept at that time. VVhen we boarded the tiarihbcu, Eleanor and l were escorted to our cabin by none other than the head steward, Elmer Wfeber. Ile informed us, much to our delight, that lfrank l'rindiville and Glen Thomas were petty officers on the ship, and that ,Ioe Ruder was in command. So we resolved to see them after we finished unpacking our luggage. We not only found them, but we also saw three former Ransom girls, Ruth NVright, Helen Hagi, and yluanita Ewing, who were on their wav to lluenos Aires to open a beauty' shop with all the latest equipment. Helen said that Ray Carty, who has built up a good business in air- conditioning in lluenos Aires, was going to be in charge of the installation of the air-conditioning system in their shop. 'l'he rest of our trip was rather uneventful. llisembarking at Rio de Janeiro, Eleanor suggested that we do a little sight- seeing after we established our residence at one of the best hotels in Rio, the CContinued on Page Seventy-twoj Page I mlm rn 1 ,. -- Y:4.,x-' . With Miss Lovejoy to guide us through that first trying year, we chose as our president, Donald Michaels: vice-president, Jeannette Wladleigh: secretary, Margaret VVeldong treasurer, Dorothy Riber. Then we became sophomores and were glad of it, tool No longer could we be classed as green freslnnen. As sophomores we selected for the office of president, Gilbert Kamm: vice- president, Oluf Lund: secretary-treasurer, Julia Ricolo. Mr. Haegele was our sponsor. ln February we held a party in the lower hall. Of course there was a noticeable improvement shown in our dancing as we became more experienced in the art. In the fall of 1941 we became juniors and were definitely classed in the upper bracket of the school society. Our junior leaders were Tris Mcliinney, presidentg Phyllis Ifrederisy, vice- presidentg Doris Robinson, secretaryg and Gilbert Kamm, treasurer. Miss Mc- Clelland was our sponsor until the second semester, when she left D. T. H. S. Miss Chewning then became our adviser. Growing Pains was the name of our junior play given in December. The cast included Eleanor Hayes, Oluf Lund, Iris McKinney, Doten llush, Nancy Lewis, Dorothy Paulsen, Jewell Armes, Miriam Burkhart, Shirley Reeb, Richard liillings, joe Ruder, William Call, Herbert Drew, Donald Michaels, Lucille Flint, Anna Porth, Rosemary Cruise, and John Metzke. Our biggest moment of the year was the Junior-Senior Reception, known to all as the Prom . May 23 was the date of our farewell to the seniors of 1942. This year we chose Doten Rush, president: Herbert Drew, vice-president: Nancy Lewis, secretary: and Iris Mcliinney, treasurer. Miss Hunter became our senior adviser. To earn money we sold magazines and Christmas wreaths, held many mixers, and sold candy at the games. Eleanor Hayes was voted the editor of The Trojan News. Nancy Lewis was elected editor-in-chief of the '43 Rudder, a position which carried many responsibilities. Our representative in the D. A. R. Good Citizen contest was lris McKinney. Glenn Conschack was our senior essay contest winner for the American Legion Essay. The senior play was entitled The Imaginary Invalid . ln the cast were Oluf Lund, Eleanor Hayes, lris McKinney, Walter Komorowski, Nancy Lewis, Harvey llattrell, John Metzke, Donald Michaels, William Call, Trella Klingler, Gene Watters, and Herbert Drew. Starting out rather slow, the Trojans im- proved rapidly and finished in full stride. 'lthe fact that there were only seven games this year did not lessen the excitement. Dwight won the majority of the games, with four victories against three defeats. Although this record is not outstanding, it is interest- ing to note that two of these defeats ended by the score of 14-13. These games could have easily been turned into victories or ties by the addition of an extra point. liive lettermen returned at the start of the foot- ball season to form the nucleus of this year's football team. Failure to convert an extra point late in the fourth quarter cost the Trojans a tie. Dwight made twelve first downs to Watseka's eleven, being able to score only two out of five goal line thrusts. VVatseka scored First after recovering a fumble on their own 35. Dwight retaliated by tying the score before the first quarter ended, VV'atseka regained the lead in the second period on a sustained drive after the kick-off. The Trojans' attempt to make the score equal ended on the three yard line as the half ended. The final touchdown came with only two minutes left to play as Eddie Christenson and Frankie Ricolo cooper- ated to make the score. However, the conversion failed, and Dwight lost a hard fought contest. In the first home game of the season, Dwight was defeated by Normal Com- munity 20-6. Dwight had trouble stopping the fast, shifty backfield of Normal: however, the game was closer than the score signifies. The Ironmen scored first in the opening period and added the extra point. The Trojans countered to cut the lead to a single point in the second quarter, but failed to convert. The score remained 7-6 until the final quarter when Normal scored twice to end the game. This was the hrst loss in the Corn Belt conference for this year. Dwight defeated their old rivals from Morris 14-6 in the third game of the season. Dwight outplayed Morris making eight first downs to Morris' four. The snow-swept gridiron made the conditions very unfavorable for football and consequently resulted in many fumbles. The Trojans scored in the opening period immediately after the kickoff on the sustained drive. The conversion was good and Dwight led 7-0. Morris' only score came in the third quarter on a fumble. but they failed to convert. The final score came in the last quarter when Bush intercepted a pass on the 30 yard stripe. The try for extra point was good and Dwight was victorious 14-6. Failure to convert a point after touchdown again proved costly as Dwight lost its second decision 14-13 to Normal U. High. Normal pulled a victory out of the fire in the last minute and a half of play by scoring a touchdown and extra point. U. High tallied first on their home field in the second quarter. The Trojans deadlocked the count in the third period to make the score 7-7. Dwight responded again early in the fourth period and scored via a pass for the lead. However they failed to convert the extra point late in the fourth quarter. This proved to be the margin of this thrilling encounter. The Trojans played brilliant ball before a large homecoming crowd to trounce Fairbury 26-6, scoring twice in the first quarter and once in the third and fourth periods. Dwight completely out-played their opponents, making 15-3 first downs and completing 5 out of 14 passes. The first score came on a thirty yard pass play and the secondi first period touchdown was scored on a 52 vard march. Following a scoreless second quarter, Dwight came back to make it 20-0. The Final score came on a dazzling 80 yard run by Frankie Ricolo in the fourth period. Fairbury averted a shut-out by scoring against the reserves late in the fourth quarter. ln the last home game of the season, Dwight's hard charging Trojans ran roughshod over Clinton 26-7 for their second Corn Belt conference win. fContinued on Page Fifty-fourj Page Fifty-three . Passing and running plays brought the Trojans their third score in the second quarter, and after a scoreless third quarter Dwight counted its final touchdown on another sustained march. The only Clinton score came in the last three min- utes when Pace's third team was in action. Un Armistice Day. Dwight completed its 1942 football season by trouncing l'ontiac 12-0. A large crowd was on hand to see the traditional battle between these two rivals. 'llhe game was dominated by the 'lirojans most of the way. The victory was Dwight's third in the Corn Belt conference. Frankie Ricolo played brilliant football to score both touchdowns at the end of his football career. Dwight scored, first, early in the second period after threatening sev- eral times in the first quarterg however, the conversion again failed. Dwight threatened on other occasions, advancing to the live yard line as the second quar- ter ended, and working the ball to the 15 yard stripe at the close of the game. Boarding the plane, we were greeted by the air-stewardes.s, Rosemary Cruise, and led to our seats. One of our neighbors across the aisle proved to be Nancy Lewis, who was sitting with a red-haired young man. She confided to us that she was private secretary to the president of the airlines and that her companion was none other than her employer, Herbert Drew. The rest of the trip proved to be very entertaining as we renewed old acquaintances. Nancy said that she had received a letter from Trella Klingler, who stated that she had accepted a position as advertising man- ager on the New York Times. Eleanor immediately went to see her after we reached home, and we all three dined together. VVe still meet occasionally, although Trella is now engaged to be married. When we reached New York after a non-stop flight, Eleanor insisted upon taking a picture of Nancy and Herbie, which I have pasted on the remaining page of my album beneath the photo of the strato-plane in which we made the trip. This ship, incidentally, was designed by an aeronautics expert, Donald Van Dyke. I hope that you will enjoy looking at the album as much as I enjoyed making it. But naturally you would like to know about the remainder of the class, although I suppose some of them have written to you more often than I have. This morning, on my way to the office of the New York Herald-Times, I stopped at a hotel restaurant to eat my breakfast. As the place was crowded, I was forced to share a table with one of the customers, who seemed familiar to me. It was Jack Phelan, and he recognized me immediately. We then became engrossed in conversation and failed to notice that our orders were ready to be taken. Looking at the menu, I discovered that Bill Call was listed as the hotel's head chef. After our orders were delivered, I asked jack what he was doing in New York. He replied that he had just arrived on the Century Limited the night before with john Metzke, to attend a stockholders' meeting that afternoon. jack said that john had been too tired to come down and have breakfast with him. I was sorry, naturally, to have missed seeing John and told Jack to be sure and say Hello to him. I then asked jack about the boys back home. You undoubt- edly know that Robert Christensen, Lester Hansen, and Howard Fredensborg have revolutionized the farming methods of Illinois. jack also said that John Waters has achieved nation-wide fame for his conversion of war industries into peace-time production centers. He has been aided by Elmer Kruger, Gene Currie, and Freddie Zabel, who, as union bosses, have a great deal of influence among the laboring classes. Page Seventy-three I understand that Arnold Landon now owns his own drug store, and that lllarvin liutz is experimenting on a new type of hybrid seed corn. After I left lack, I hurried on to the othce, but was caught in a traffic jam and nearly fell into the arms of .Iuanita Ililsborough and Anna Ifrye, who informed me that they were both happily married. 'I'hey had come to New York to do some shop- ping. We exchanged hasty good-byesu, and I hurried out of the bus and into my office building. Ilecause I was late, I dashed past the desk of our commercial artist. Ellis Ilaldwin, and the managing editor's receptionist, Charlotte Nlcliune, with barely an acknowledging nod. However, when I reached my desk, I was informed by Eleanor that there was no immediate assignment to be done. So I relaxed in my chair with the latest edition of the llt'1'fI1d-74flIIc'.Y and scanned the first page. 'lihe Iirst thing that attracted by attention was the headline, I.t. Iloten llush, LI. S. N., llonored by President . It seems he has been awarded for his out- standing work in chemical engineering. I also noticed that Uluf l,und, organist renowned, was making his tenth performance by request at Carnegie llall. His compositions for the piano and organ have also been published with great suc- cess. I hope I am able to hear him before he leaves. It has been a long time since I've seen Oluf. As I looked through the paper, my attention was attracted by the I,ove-Lorn column which is edited by Iiern VX'aldron and Ifrances Skonetski. Next to their column is the home economist's 'fHints to the Ilousekeepern, edited by Miriam llurkhart, Anna Ilorth, and Edith Ilollis. Un the next page I found a delightful interview of that famous prose writer and modern poet, I,ois hludevinc. Reading the sports section, I discovered that Robert pl. Cliristenson, I Iawk to his friends and team-mates, has scored as high man at the Eastern Ilasketball 'l'ourney and that llarvey Ilattrell has scored second highest. Also prominent in the lield of sports is Eugene VI'atters, who has set new records in tumbling routines and acrobatics. XXV.-II, I'm afraid I haven't time to write much more because I.ucilIe Iflint, our managing editor, is calling me into her office for a show-down of some kind, --I suppose, judging by the gleam in her eye. Please write soon about the latest class to graduate from Dwight Township lligh School. Sincerely yours, Ixus lllcliixxi-lv Pain' .S'r't'iulx nm l!'x'ffi7'z' Q hcl that ball!
