The ship, named after the 34th president of the United States, was christened and launched at 11:11 a.m. on Oct. ll, 1975, by ' Mrs. Mamie Doud Eisenhower, the ship's sponsor and widow of the former president. IKE,' was commissioned two years later on Oct. 18, 1977. As part of the U.S. Atlantic Fleet, IKE is homeported in Norfolk, Va. Fourteen months following commissioning, IKE left Norfolk to begin its first deployment to the Mediterranean Sea. The six-month deployment carried the crew to six European countries before returning to Norfolk on July 13, 1979. That November IKE was awarded its first Commander, Naval Air Force U.S. Atlantic Fleet, Battle Efficiency EN award as the best carrier in the Atlantic Fleet. IKE deployed a second time on April 15, 1980, to the Indian Ocean, relieving the USS Nimitz CCVN 685 in the Arabian Sea. Two hundred fifty-four days later, with only a five-day port visit to Singapore, IKE returned to Norfolk on Dec. 22, 1980. Because of IKE's performance, it received a second Battle Efficiency ME. Sailing on its third deployment on Jan. 5, 1982, IKE headed back to the Mediterranean Sea for a second time. During the six months, IKE visited Tangier, Morocco, Naples, Italy, Haifa, Israel, Alexandria, Egypt, Palma de Mallorca, Spain, Athens, Greece, and Monaco. IKE returned to Norfolk on July 13, 1982, and received its third consecutive Battle Efficiency UE. While preparing for its fourth deployment, IKE participated in numerous fleet exercises in the Caribbean operating area, where it became the first modern U.S. aircraft carrier to visit Antigua, West Indies. IKE deployed a third time to the Mediterranean Sea from April 27 to Dec. 7, 1983. On Aug. 26, 1983, IKE arrived off the coast of Beirut, Lebanon, where a multi-national peace-keeping force had been working to maintain an uneasy truce. IKE's aircraft flew reconnaissance missions and supply and technical flights in support of the forces ashore. IKE left Lebanese waters to participate in exercise Display Determination ,83 and called on Naples, Italy, but was called back to the troubled ' area after the truck-bombing of the U.S. Marine Corps barracks in October. ' IKE deployed to the Mediterranean Sea a fourth time on Oct. 10, 1984. IKE left the Mediterranean on April 27, 1985, and arrived in Norfolk 12 days later. In August 1985, IKE left Norfolk for the North Atlantic and participated in several NATO exercises and with two other U.S. carriers and several NATO ships. For its outstanding performance in 1985, IKE was awarded the Battle Efficiency En award, the fourth in eight years. IKE entered Newport News Shipbuilding and Drydock Company on Oct. 26, 1985, for an 18-month complex overhaul. During the yard period, IKE received an intense renovation of virtually all departmental spaces and extensive upgrades of weapons systems which included adding three NATO Sea Sparrow missile systems and three Close-In Weapons Systems CCIWSJ mounts. IKE left the shipyard in April 1987 and returned to its homeport of Norfolk. During work-up operations, IKE made port visits to St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands, Montego Bay, Jamaica, and Caracas, Venezuela. IKE departed for its sixth deployment, the fifth to the Mediterranean Sea, on Feb. 29, 1988. On that deployment, exercises included Dragon Hammer 1-88 and Optimize 1-88. Port visits would include Cannes, Toulon, and Marseilles, France, Palma de Mallorca, Spain, Haifa, Israel, Antalya, Turkey, and Naples, Italy. IKE returned to Norfolk on Aug. 29, 1988. A After a five-month yard period, IKE retumed to sea in March 1989. During the next year, the ship participated in various exercises and independent training periods in preparation for deployment. On March 8, 1990, IKE departed on its sixth Mediterranean Sea deployment. The deployment became a commemorative event in the worldwide Dwight D. Eisenhower Centennial celebrating of the 100th anniversary of the late president's birth. 1 During D-Day anniversary ceremonies off the coast of Normandy, IKE,s son, John Eisenhower, and D-Day veterans embarked in the ship while Carrier Air Wing Seven conducted a memorial flyover of the American cemetery at Omaha Beach ashore. ' IKE became the first carrier to conduct sustained operations in the Red Sea in August after it transitted the Suez Canal on Aug. 8, 1990. This was in response to Iraq's invasion of Kuwait. Additionally, IKE was only the second nuclear-powered carrier to transit the canal. IKE served as a ready striking force in the even Iraq invaded Saudi Arabia, and participated in maritime interception operations in support of a United Nations embargo against Iraq. IKE departed the Red Sea on Aug. 24 and returned to Norfolk from its Centennial Cruise on Sept. 12, 1990. ' Early in 1994 the first women began reporting to IKE. Officers, chief petty officers, and junior enlisted personnel of all ratings were the first women to receive orders to an operational aircraft carrier. In September 1994, IKE and the U.S. Army's 10th Mountain Division made history with the, concept of adaptable force packaging? The divisionis soldiers and equipment were loaded on board, and the IKE Army-Navy team headed for the shores of Port-au-Prince in order to spearhead Operation Uphold Democracy, the U.S.-led effort to restore the democratically elected government of Haiti. One month later, on Oct. 20, 1994, IKE departed for a six-month deployment to the Mediterranean Sea, Arabian Gulf and Adriatic Sea. This deployment marked the first time that women deployed as crewmembers of a U.S. Navy combatant. The IKE!Carrier Air Wing Three team included more than 400 women. Cham of Command In the Navy, the chain of command starts with the newest recruit and runs all the Way up to the president of the United States. s Every link in the chain of command is a vital part of expediting day-to-day operations, Whether they be routine or mission oriented. Information flows both Ways along the chain of command -- ensuring the right people stay in- formed and that tasking is carried forth at the proper levels. i Measures of a ship's success are a direct reflection of the effectiveness of the chain of command. And IKE's records of achievements indicate a long history of a good strong chain. 74e4enmau64av:4ec5awa,4mmmwzd6eefp Mememmfaamedfqwmmfdqpmahgdowwa gzawagagnwmaw.
