His family moved to Abilene, Kan., in 1891 where he lived until his acceptance to the United States Military Academy in 1911. , Following his graduation in 1915, Ike was assigned to the infantry at Fort Sam Houston, Texas, where he met Miss Mamie Doud. They were married in Denver, Colo., on July 1, 1916. Subsequent duty assignments included attendance at the Command and General Staff School at Fort Leavenworth, Kan., in 1926, where he finished first in a class of 275. After graduation from the Army War College in 1928, Ike served in various capacities, including duty in the Office of the Army Chief of Staff. . In 1935, Ike became an assistant to Gen. At the outset of World War Il, Ike was selected to head the Operations Division of the War Department and in 1942 was named Commanding General of the European Theater. By 1943, Ike's forces had conquered North Africa and Sicily and had eliminated Italy as an Axis power. Presi- dent Franklin D. He was named Army Chief of Staff, succeeding General George C. Marshall, on Nov. 19, 1945. After the war, Ike served as president of Columbia University and Supreme Allied Commander of the forces established under the NATO Pact. V In 1952, he retired from the Army, and as standard bearer of the Republican Party, won election easily to become the 34th president of the United States. It was during Eisenhower' s administration that the Navy' s nuclear shipbuilding program experienced significant growth. In his eight years as president, 29 nuclear attack submarines, the first of 14 Polaris submarines, two nuclear cruisers, and the nuclear aircraft carrier USS Enterprise were authorized. Ike left the White House on Jan. 20, 1961, after 50 years of service to his country. He retired to his farm in Gettysburg, Pa., where he lived the life of an elder statesman until his death on March 28, 1969.

USS DWIGHT D. EISENHOWER The Mission We in the Navy have a pride which has evolved from attitudes and convictions steeped in honored tradition. This pride is a direct result of the incom- parable experience of living and fighting on the sea -- a dangerous and unforgiving environment which demands from all of us a high degree of personal and family sacrifice. It includes the spirit of adven- ture in travel and living overseas. Most important, it is the experience known to every Navy man and woman of being on watch around the clock in the service of our country and of being a shipmate to all past, present and future Sailors. -- Navy Policy Book The vital economic, political and military inter- ests ofthe United States are truly global in nature and scope. In many respects these interests are located across broad oceans, and to a great extent they intersect those of current and emergent re- gional powers. It is in the world's littorals where the naval service, operating from sea bases in inter- national waters, can influence events ashore in support of our interests. e Naval forces are particularly well-suited to the entire range of military operations in support of our national strategy. They continue the historic role of naval forces engaged in preventive diplomacy and otherwise supporting our policies overseas. -- Forward From the Sea 7655 Dwgdz D. Efaewawm mm at Hmm, 746-zeeq.
