0 0 1 Carrier Wing Seven To perform its combat mission, IKE relies upon her embark- ed air wing, CVW-7. Comprised of nine squadrons flying a variety of today's Navy combat and support aircraft, air wing pilots and air crews provide IKE with a powerful offensive and defensive air combat and strike capability. The E-2C Hawkeye is a twin engine turbo-prop aircraft de- signed to provide units of the Fleet with early detection and warning of approaching enemy forces. Using its distinctive radar and communications equipment, the E-2C provides strike and traffic control, area surveillance, search and rescue guidance, navigational assistance and communications relay. Carrier Early Warning Squadron VAW-121, the Blue Tails, based at Naval Air Station, Norfolk, Virginia, flies the Hawk- eye from the USS DWIGHT D. EISENHOWER. The S-3 Viking is the first completely computerized, carrier- based, jet, anti-submarine aircraft, it has the all weather ca- pability to search for, localize and destroy enemy submarines. The S-3 is designed to carry an array of ordnance, including homing torpedoes, mines, depth charges, rockets and mis- il With modifications conducted after the 1988 Mediter- s es. ranean deployment, the S-3s on the USS DWIGHT D. EI- SENHOWER are capable of carrying Harpoon anti-surface missiles. The Vikings foremost task is to protect the aircraft carrier itself. Air Anti-Submarine Squadron VS-31, the Top- cats, based at Naval Air Station, Jacksonville, Florida, flies the Viking from the USS DWIGHT D. ' 6 ' ' ' Qt :wail The A-6E Intruder is a two-seat, low-level medium attack bomber which has the capability to deliver weapons with pin- point accuracy deep into hostile territory, in the worst weath- er, day or night. The aircraft can carry up to five 2,000-pound bombs or 28 500-pound bombs making this plane second only to the B-52 in bomb load capacity. The KA-6D model of the intruder is the tanker version used for in-flight refueling. At- tack Squadron VA-34, the Blue Blasters, based at Naval Air Station, Oceana, Virginia, flies the A-6E and the KA-6D ver- sions of the Intruder from the USS DWIGHT D. EISEN- HOWER. l V The A7E Corsair II is a single seat, single engine light bomber with a primary mission of locating assigned targets and delivering an ordnance payload on target. The aircraft has the additional missions of aerial minelaying, inflight refu- eling, search and surveillance, target reconnaissance and anti-submarine warfare. The Corsair II is being replaced with the FKA-18 on board the USS DWIGHT D. EISENHOW- ER. The 1988 Mediterranean deployment was the last cruise that Attack Squadrons VA-46, the Clansmen, and VA-7 2, the . Blue Hawks, flew from the USS DWIGHT D. EISENHOW- ER.
