, . r. 7 .aster Chief William D. J ' - ,Johnson was born and 1 raised in Emporia, Vir- ginia until he enlisted in the United States Navy in 1961. He attended basic training in Great Lakes, Illi- nois and in July of 1961 reported to the USS INTREPID QCVA 115, where he began his distinguished career in the shipserviceman rating. During his seven years aboard USS INTREPID, 'Master Chief .John- son completed three rMediterra- nean 'cruises and two combat opera- tions in Southeast Asia. From 1967 to 1969 Master Chief Johnson was stationed at the Naval Security Group Activity, Edzell, Scotland. 'In 1969,ras a first class petty officer, he received orders to Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, as a recruit company com- mander. Master Chief Johnson de- parted Recruit Training command in 1972 to serve aboard USS JOHN I F. KENNEDY QCV 675 until 1975 when he departed as a Senior Chief Petty Officer. 7 Master Chief Johnson then re- ported to the Naval Weapons Sta- tion, Yorktown, Virginia where he served on independent duty as the officer in charge of the navy com- missary store. During this tour he, was advanced to Master Chief and was selected as the Command Mas- ter Chief for all enlisted personnel assigned to the six commissary stores' supported by the Navy Re- sale System Office, Norfolk. Master Chief Johnson served aboard USS INDEPENDENCE QCV Gllas the Supply Department Leading Chief from 1979 until June 1982 when he reported to the Navy Exchange, Portsmouth, New Hampshire as officer in charge. Master Chief Johnson then, re- ceived orders to the Navy commis- sary store, Little Creek as the first enlisted officer in charge of a major , commissary store. Q In October 1985 Master Chief Johnson reported 9 to USS DWIGHT 9 D. EISENHOWER QCVN 691 as the Supply Depart- ment Leading Chief. In March 1986 he became acting Command Master Chief of IKE and in October 1986 was appointed the Command Mas- , ter Chief. ,A ' Master Chief Johnson's awards include the Navy Commendation Medal with Gold Star, Navy Achievement Medal, Navy Unit JS' SHCM Jos - vi ' 44' A N K Commendation Medal, Six -Good Conduct Medals, the Battle E , Vietnam Service with three stars and various campaign ribbons. , Master Chief Johnson is married to the former Joan Marie Danylieko of Northhampton, Mass. who also serves on active duty in the Navy., He has two children, Don Jr., and Barbara Jane. p ws-. -'1'.-- : .sf

DWIGHT D. EISENHO ER coNs'rRUc'r1o AN COMM SSIONIN he keel of the USS DWIGHT D. EISEN- HOWER QCVN-695, named after the thirty-fourth presi- dent of the United States, was laid at Newport News Shipbuilding and Drydock Company on 15 August 1970. IKE, as the ship is affection- ately called by the crew, was chris- tened and launched at 11:11 a.m. on October 11, 1975, by Mrs. Mamie Doud Eisenhower, the ship's spon- sor and widow of the President. On October 18, 1977, IKE was commis- sioned and became a part of the United States Atlantic Fleet, home ported in Norfolk, Virginia. As part of the United States Atlantic Fleet, IKE routinely de- ploys to the Mediterranean Sea to fulfill the defense commitments of the United States Sixth Fleet, but is capable of deploying anywhere in the world. After winning the Commander, Naval Air Force, U.S. Atlantic Fleet Battle Efficiency E in November 1979, IKE has set a standard of ex- cellence unmatched in the United States Navy. In addition to her Bat- tle Efficiency awards, IKE has also been awarded several Admiral Flat- ley Aviation Safety Awards.
