He received a Master of Science in Aeronautical Engineer- ing in June 1969. V - I' I I Designated- a Naval Aviator -in December 1970, he reported to VA- 42, NAS Oceana, Virginia, for A-6 fleet replacement training. He re- ported to VA-7 5 in December 1971 aboard USS SARATOGA QCV 605 for a deployment to the Western Pacific, and flew more than 180 combat missions. While in the squadron he served as Aircraft and Line Division Officer and NATOPS officer. For their performance dur- ing that cruise, the 'y'Sunday Pun-- chers earned the RADM C. Wade McClusky Award as the Navy's best attack squadron, the first A-6 squadron so honored. ' In April 1974 Commander Pyle received orders to VX-5 Det O at 'NAS Oceana. Following disestab- lishment of Det O he completed his VX-5 tour at NAS ,China Lake, California. He served as Safety Of- ficer, A-6 Tactical Manual Coordi- nator and project pilot for A-6E TRAM initial operational testing. Commander Pyle was then or- dered to VA-196 via VA-128. He joined the ' Main, Battery in August 1977 and completed a West- Pac-deployment aboard the USS ENTERPRISE QCVN 651. During that time, he served as TrainingOf- ficer, Operations Officer and Main-' tenance Officer. A I Commander Pyle's next assign- ment. was to VA-128 in'November 1979, as an-instructor pilot. While with the Golden Intruders he was the MAWS Coordinator, 'Crew Training Officer and Operations Officer. He rejoined the Main 'Bat- tery in November 1981 as Execu- tive 'Officer and later 'served as Commanding Officer' completing an, around-the-world deployment . 'in USS, CORAL SEA KQV 431. Duringhhis command tour, VA-196 won the RADM C.
