Jerry O. Tuttle Rear Admiral, U.S. Navy Commander Carrier Gro up Eight Rear Admiral Jerry O. Tuttle a native of Hatfield, Indiana enlisted in the Navy in March 1955. Shortly thereafter, he was selected for the Naval Aviation Cadet QNAVCADJ Program. He reported to Pensacola, Florida, in July 1955, and was designated a Naval Aviator upon comple- tion of flight training in October 1956. Assignments in his career include: Staff of Commander Naval Air Force, U.S. Atlantic Fleetg Executive Officer, Attack Squadrons ONE HUNDRED SEVENTY-FOUR lVA-1741 and EIGHTY- ONE lVA-813, Aide and Flag Lieutenant to Commander in Chief, U.S. Pacific Fleetg Attack Squadrons FORTY-FOUR QVA-445, FIFTEEN QVA-153, and ONE HUNDRED TWELVE lVA-112ig Fighter Squadron ONE HUNDRED TWELVE QVF-1125, and Office of the Chief of Naval Operations. He has commanded Attack Squadron EIGHTY-ONE lVA-815, Carrier Air Wing THREE, USS KALAMAZOOQAOR-61, and USS JOHN F. KENNEDY QCV-67l. He was assigned as Special Assistant tc the Chief of Naval Operations and as Vice Deputy Director for Intelligence and External Affairs at the Defense Intel- ligence Agency prior to assuming command as -Commander Carrier Group EIGHT in Juris, 1981. He received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Communications Engineering from the Naval Postgraduate School in 1963, where he attended the under- graduate and postgraduate schools simultaneously.tln 1968, he attended the Naval War College at Newport, Rhode Island. He received his Masters Degree in International Relations from George Washington University, and graduated from the Command and Staff School, with honors, in July, 1969. He has been awarded the Legion of Merit, two Distinguished Flying Crosses, two Meritorious Service Medals, 23 Air Medals Q18 strikelflight and five individual awardsi, four Navy Commendation Medals and various other campaign medals. He flew 210 combat missions over North Vietnam and has made over 1,000 arrested carrier landings. He was the recipient of the 1978 Navy League's John Paul Jones Award for inspirational leadership. He is married to the former Barbara Bonifay of Pensacola, Florida. They have five children.

George D. O'Brien, Jr. Captain, U.S. Navy Executive Officer Captain George D. O'Brien, Jr. entered the Naval Academy in July 1956 and was commissioned in June 1960. He reported ,immediately to flight training, and received his wings in November 1961. After completion of training in the P-2 aircraft, he reported to Patrol Squadron SIXTEEN in Jacksonville, Florida. During this tour he completed deployments to Iceland, Bermuda and Cape Town, South Africa, and qualified as Patrol Plane Commander in the P-2 and P-3A aircraft. In December 1965 Captain O'Brien reported to the Naval Postgraduate School, Monterey, California, where in June 1970, he received a PHD in Aeronautical Engineering. He is a SIGMA Xl. After graduation he reported to Training Squadron TWENTY THREE for jet transition training, in the A-6 aircraft in Attack Squadron FORTY TWO. In August 1971 he reported to Attack Squadron THIRTY FOUR where he served as Operations Officer and Aircraft Maintenance Officer, completing two Mediterranean deployments on USS JOHN F. KENNEDY QCV 67j. In December 1973 Captain O'Brien was assigned to Air Test and Evaluation Squadron FIVE QVX-5j, as A-6 Projects coordinator and Projects Officer for RABVAL, a joint Navy!Air Force evalua- tion involving the F-111E and A-6E aircraft. In September 1974 he reported for duty as Readiness Officer for Commander Medium Attack Wing ONE. In December 1975 Captain O'Brien was assigned as Executive Officer, and later Commanding Officer of Attack Squadron THIRTY FIVE, embarked on USS NIMITZ QCVN 68j. In July 1978 he reported to the Naval Air Systems Command as Deputy Program Manager for the A-6 Aircraft. Captain O'Brien reported to USS DWIGHT D. EISENHOWER ICVN 69j in September 1980 after completion of Nuclear Power Training. He resides in Virginia Beach, Virginia with his wife Elise and their children George, Caroline, Kevin and Roseleen. James E. Service Rear Admiral,U.S. Navy Commander Battle Force Sixth Fleet Rear Admiral James E. Service was born in Grosse Point, Michigan, and lived throughout the midwest before graduat- ing from high school in Abington, Pennsylvania in 1949. He joined the U.S. Navy as a Naval Aviation Cadet QNAV- CADJ shortly after the start of the Korean War while attending Pennsylvania State University. Upon completion of flight training in April, 1952, he was commissioned an Ensign and ordered to Fighter Squadron FIFTY ONE via the Navy Jet Training Unit. Upon joining the squadron at NAS Miramar, California, he deployed in USS VALLEY FORGE to the Korean theater where he flew more than 65 combat missions. As a Lieutenant QJGJ he next served as an instructor pilot in the All Weather Flight School at Corpus Christi, Texas. In 1957, he joined Attack Squadron ONE FIFTY ONE, and was designated a Special Weapons Delivery Pilot. Following a deployment to the Western Pacific he reported to USS TICONDEROGA QCVA 141 as a Catapul t!Arresting Gear Officer in 1959 From 1961 to 1963 Lieutenant Commander Service served as Senior Project Test Pilot at NATF Lakehurst New Jersey engaged in experimental work on land based catapults and arresting gear He then attended US Naval Postgraduate School Monterey Calif receiving a Baccalaureate Degree in Political Science He was ordered to Heavy Photographic Squadron SIXTY ONE where he flew more than 70 RASB reconnaissance and mapping combat flights in the Vietnam conflict He then reported to USS RANGER in the Tonkin Gulf and continued his participation in combat operations He next underwent refresher training in the A 3 Skywarrior and took command of Heavy Attack Squadron ONE TWO THREE He was then ordered to the USS INDEPEN DENCE QCV 621 as Executive Officer until May of 1972 Next he attended the U S Army War College in Car isle Pennsylvania engaging in postgraduate level training in Defense Management During this period he also earned a Master of Science Degree in Communica tions from Shippensburg State College After promotion to Captain he commanded the Fast Combat Support Ship USS SACRAMENTO QAOE 13 Upon completing a deployment to the Western Pacific he reported for duty aboard the USS INDEPENDENCE QCV 621 and served as commanding officer for more than 22 months He was then assigned to Washington D C as Executive Assistant to the Vice Chief of Naval Operations QVCNOJ During this assign ment he was selected for promotion to flag rank and reassigned as Director Aviation Manpower and Training on the staff of Deputy Chief of Naval Operations for Air Warfare. Rear Admiral Service assumed command of Carrier Group EIGHT in May 1980. He assumed his present position as Commander, Battle Force Sixth Fleet in June, 1981, and broke his flag in aboard USS FORRESTAL QCV 591. He shifted his flag to USS NIMITZ QCVN 68j in early August, 1981 and then to USS EISENHOWER QCVN 691 in January, 1982 His personal decorations include the Legion of Merit t2j, Bronze Star, Air Medal 171, and Navy Commendation Medal Rear Admiral Service is married to the former Natalie Harpst of San Diego, California.
