Rear Admiral William E. Ramsey, U.S Navy Commanding Officer Rear Admiral William E. Ramsey, a native of San Diego, Ca., received his commission from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1953. He served in USS GLYNN CAPA 2393 as an Ensign, then attended flight training, becoming a designated Naval Aviator in March 1955. He served in Fighter Squadron 84 until 1959 and then as an instructor in Attack Squadron 43 until 1960. He was selected for the U.S. Naval Test Pilot School in Patuxent River, Md., in the summer of 1960, before being assigned to the Flight Test Division at the Naval Air Test Center as a Carrier Suitability Project Pilot. During this period, he became the first pilot to make a nose-tow catapult launch from a carrier. He was also the first pilot to conduct a single- engine landing aboard ship in both the F-4 Phantom and E-2C Hawkeye aircraft, to take off and recover aboard ship in the E-2C, and to perform minimum end-speed catapult launches in both aircraft. In 1962, he was one of five test pilots in the country nominated for the Ivan C. Kincheloe Award as the outstanding test pilot of the year by the Society of En- gineering Test Pilots. In 1962, he was selected by NASA as one of the final 34 pilots interviewed in Houston for the GEMINI Program, and in 1963, he again went to Houston as one of the final group selected for the APOLLO Program. In late 1963, he was assigned as Flag Secretary to COMCARDIV SIX. Following that tour, he attended the Royal Air Force Staff College in Brack- nell, U.K., in 1965. He served as Operations Officer for Carrier Air Wing SIX in 1966 and 1967. Following a tour as Executive Officer in VA-65, he took command of the squadron in 1968. One year later, he underwent training in the Nuclear Power Program and was assigned to USS INDE- PENDENCE QCV 623 as Operations Officer, fleeting up to Executive Officer in December 1970. After a tour in the Office of Program Appraisal in the SECNAV Secretariat, he received orders to command USS PENSACOLA CLSD 383. RAdm Ramsey reported to the DWIGHT D. EISENHOWER Precommis- sioning Unit as Prospective Commanding Officer in October 1975 from the faculty of the Naval War College. He guided the ship through the various construction phases, early at sea periods, her October 1977 com- missioning and her maiden transit to the Mediterranean as a forward deployed entity. After his selection to Flag rank in February 1979, RAdm Ramsey assumed duties as Commander Carrier Group ONE. 5 ill

Captain J. H. Mauldin, U.S. Navy Commanding Officer Captain James H. Mauldin, a native of Brewster, Fla., enrolled in the Georgia Institute of Technology where he was graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Physics in 1953. He taught Engineering Physics and did research work in Radio Frequency and Microwave Spectroscopy, earn- ing his Master of Science Degree at Georgia Tech in 1955. Following graduation, Capt. Mauldin was commissioned an Ensign and underwent Navy flight training at Pensacola, Fla., and at Corpus Christi, Tx. From September 1956 to August 1959, he served as a pilot and ad- ministrative officer with Attack Squadron 35 at the Naval Air Station, Jacksonville, Fla. From September 1959 to June 1963, he attended California Institute of Technology where he earned a Master of Science Degree and the De- gee of Aeronautical Engineer. Following tours of duty with Attack Squad- rons 44 and 34, Capt. Mauldin reported to USS SARATOGA CCV 601 in March 1966 where he served as Aircraft Handling Officer. From April 1968 to June 1969, he served with the Operations Study Group in Wash- ington D.C., followed by a tour with Attack Squadron 122 from July through October 1969. From November 1969 to June 1971, he served first as Executive Officer, then as Commanding Officer, of Attack Squad- ron 155. In July 1971, he began Nuclear Power Training at the Nuclear Power School in Vallejo, Ca. In December 1972, he reported to the NIMITZ Precommissioning Unit at Newport News, Va., as Executive Officer, and was Executive Officer of USS NIMITZ CCVN 685 from the time of the ship's commissioning in May 1975 until April 1976. Prior to assuming command of USS DWIGHT D. EISENHOWER in February 1979, Capt. Mauldin served as Commanding Officer of USS SEATTLE CAOE 33. Capt. Mauldin has been awarded the Navy Commendation Medal, the Air Medal, the Bronze Star, the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal and the National Defense Service Medal. He is married to the former Mary Inman Bell, of Atlanta, Ga. They have two daughters, Marise and Lori Ann.
