SS uxbur ay KA UP-3.59 On the 6th of March l964 the USS DUXBURY BAY left Norfolk, Virginia, for her fourteenth Middle East cruise -- a trip which would take her crew half Way around the world to places like Djibouti, Karachi, and Mombasa before she re- turned to Norfolk over seven months later on l8 Cctober l964. This book takes you along With the crew and attempts to depict a typical sampling of the Work and recreation that was included in all the various aspects of the mission of the DUXBURY BAY. . Upon arrival in Bahrain .Island We relieved the USS CREENWICI-I BAY which meant assuming the responsibility of caring for, aiding, and transporting the staff of the Commander Middle East Force . Carrying out these duties involved many long hours of Work interlaced by visits to several interesting and romantic ports throughout the Whole of the Middle East . All the departments of the ship had important and necessary talents to con- tribute to the overall mission which drew praise from the Commander Middle East Force and many of the leaders of the cities and countries visited. To list the statistics of miles traveled, fuel oil used, gallons of coffee con- sumed Would be a cliche. lt is enough to say that the voyage included transits through the Corinth and Suez Canals, visits to areas Where the temperature reached 130 degrees, and trips through the swollen seas of the African monsoons This book is dedicated to the officers and men of the DUXBURY BAY, all of whom contributed vitally to a successful mission. . 2.5 .--'w -1, -- 321 vi!!- rr, 'i .QZA
