WE THE CREW AND OFFICERS OF THE U. S. S. DUXBURY BAY CAVP-385,
having set sail on the Third of October, Nineteen Hundred and Fifty-seven for
our annual cruise to the Persian Gulf, do present to our families and friends
this cruise book to be a lasting memory of our experiences and life during our
time spent in the Middle East.

A MESSAGE FROM THE CAPTAIN
A cruise book depictingvarious activities of
a ship's crew is a valuable momento of a team
working together. At the beginning of my tour
the DUXBURYBAYwas no more than a receiving
ship for personnel coming for brief periods and
others departing for other duty. You, who be-
came the permanent crew for our Persian Gulf
duty, have every right to be proud of your work.
The Operational Readiness Inspection, cruise
to the Gulf, and the carrying of desparately
needed supplies to Ceylon are testimonials to
you.
Good luck to all of you, inside or out of the
Navy. -

PUSTLUDE
The cruise is finished and though all good things must have an end, there still re-
mains the memories and impressions that have been born out of sincerity and hard
work. Often we did not sense the mark we left on the world for as Americans we live
within ourselves, smugly and securely, but our experiences in today'sworld are erasing
our self-centered attitudes and the Democracy we once hoarded is becoming like the
sea itself - stretching its arms to all the world. Each sailor has left some part of
America in the lands he has visited and though the mark he has made has not yet be-
come physically manifest, he has left an ideal with the peoples of lesser progressive
countries.
The coconut vender in Colombo, the aggressive gem salesman in Bahrein, the
taxi driver in Rome and the orphan of Lisbon shall not easily forget the attitudes and
generosities of the American sailor.
Many a man asked just what his purpose had been on this mission. . . The answer
quite simple. He was there to accomplish nothing but to be a good American and worthy
of his uniform and the flag he stood under.
It won't be the same crew next year but the family that we all were shall never be
forgotten by the men of the DUX BAY.
UPON YOUR DEPARTURE, YOU LEAVE US AND THE
MIDDLE .EAST AREA WITH NOSTALGIA AND SADNE SS. THAT
OUR CRUISE TOGETHER HAS BEEN SO HAPPY AND SUC-
CESSFUL HAS BEEN DUE TOYOUAND YOUR COMPLETE AND
FULL TIME EFFORTS AND COOPERATIONS. NO ONE COULD
HAVE DONE MORE THAN EACH OF YOU. MAY YOUR SAIL-
ING ALL BE PLEASANT AND GOD BE WITH YOU,
