E ecutive Officer LCDR John A. Martin Lieutenant Commander Martin was bom in Aomori, Japan on June 1, 1955. In June 1978 he graduated from the University of Washington and received his commission as an Ensign. Later that year he reported to his .first ship, USS HIGBEE QDD-8063, as DCA and Engineering Admin Officer. In August of 1979, after completing the Surface War- fare Officer School Basic Course in Newport, R.I., LCDR Martin reported aboard USS FRANCIS HAMMOND CFF-10667 as Main Propulsion Assistant. In May 1984, he reported for duty at Fleet Training Group, Pearl Harbor. Following De- partment Head School, LCDR Martin was assigned to CINCPACFLT Propulsion Examining Board, where he screened for Executive Officer. He became DURHAM'S Executive Officer in October, 1990. LCDR Martin and his wife Debra have three sons, Joshua, Jason, and Jordan. The Martin family resides in Santee, Califomia. Command Master Chief MMCM CSWJ Lawrence J. Young Master Chief Machinist's Mate Young was bom in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He enlisted in the Navy in Sept. 1971 and reported to his first ship, the USS MOUNT WHITNEY ILCC-205 in Dec. 1971. Four years later, he trans- ferred to the USS DENVER, QLPD-95 for a two year tour. Master Chief Young moved on to the USS BLUE RIDGE QLCC-199 in the spring of 1978, and to instructor duty the following year. He retumed to sea to decommission the USS POINT DEFIANCE QLSD-513 in Jan. 1981, and then went on to tours aboard the USS ENGLAND QCG-225 and the USS LEAHY ICG-165. In June 1989, shortly after advancing to Master Chief, he retumed to shore duty as MPA for the 1200 lb. training plant at Service Schools Command, Great Lakes. Master Chief Young reported to USS DURHAM as Command Master Chief in July 1990. Master Chief Young has eamed an unlimited Chief Engineer Li- cense and is working toward his Bachelor's Degree through Navy Champus. He, his wife Brigitte, and their two daughter's live in Chula Vista, CA.
