Deck Department l LT WILSON FIRST LIEUTENANT LT STEPHAN ASST. FIRST LIEUTENANT I DURHAMIS Deck Department comprises 105 men in five divisionsl' First and Second Divisions, who are responsi- ble for the forward and after portions of the ship, respec- tively, had their work cut out for them throughout the deployment. When not standing bridge watches, they con- ducted countless underway replenishments, moved thou- sands of tons of cargo on and off the ship, raised and lowered hundreds of boats, and fought the never-ending war of preservation, working diligently to stay one step ahead of the destructive effects of wind and sea. Third Division, the Boat Group, ran a large-scale shuttle service between ships of the ARG throughout Desert Shield and Desert Storm. Even in port, the men and landing craft of Third Division were ready for any tasking, from supporting Marine Corps training exercises on the beach to conducting typhoon relief operations. Fourth Division, which owns and operates the ship's guns, was always right on target, whether breezing through live gunnery exercises, qualifying the crew on small arms, or conducting turkey shoots. Fifth Division is Deck Departmentis smallest division. As side cleaners, these sail- ors brought DURHAM her reputation as the best-looking ship in the ARG, while their upkeep and operation of the flight deck and equipment carried the ship through over 1100 helicopter operations with a perfect safety record. All underway replenishments, flight operations, boat and cargo-handling evolutions, and gun shoots require incredi- ble effort and teamwork from the entire Deck Department.
