Initially, she sailed under the name of SENATOR, then later as the GOVERNADOR BORIES. In 1918 she was chartered by the Navy for use in WWII and was commissioned as USS SHERMAN. Later that year, the SHERMAN was recommissioned as USS DURHAM. DUR- HAM made three trips to Europe carrying war materials before she returned to civilian service late in 1919 and faded from naval history. The present USS DURHAM is a modern, fully capable attack cargo ship of the CHARLESTON class. She was built by the Newport News Shipbuilding and Drydock Company, who laid the keel on July 10, 1967. DURHAM was launched on March 29, 1968, and commissioned on May 24, 1969. DURHAM's primary mission is to carry material and equipment to support a waterborne assault upon hostile shores. To this end, she has four enormous cargo holds for storage, and extensive system of elevators and heavy-lift booms for loading and offloading cargo, and eleven landing craft to carry everything to the beach. DURHAM is 575 feet 6 inches long, 82 feet wide, and displaces over 18,000 tons of seawater. Pushed along by 22,000 shaft horsepower, she can sustain a speed of 21 knots. She carries a crew of 334, with room for an additional comple- ment of 226 Marines. DURHAM is armed with three twin- mount, 3 50 caliber rapid-fire guns. DURHAM's primary offensive weapon system is her as- sault boats. These include: , - Four 74-foot aluminum LCM-8's fLanding Craft Mecha- nizedj, each of which can carry a 60-ton tank or 150 combat troops, - Five 56-foot LCM-6 boats, which can carry 28 tons of cargo or 120 troops: - Two 36-foot fiberglass LCPL's fLanding Craft Personnel Lightj, which are used as command and control boats for directing and leading the amphibious assault. In total, DURHAM's boats can transport over 1100 troops or three-quarters of a million pounds C375 tonsj of material ashore simultaneously, and can repeat the round-trip indefi- nitely, placing approximately 26,000 troops or 9000 tons ashore in a 24-hour period. DURHAM can supply: - enough electricity for approximately 2000 homes. - enough steam to provide over 35,000 homes with central heat. I - enough stores to feed 600 people three hearty meals per day for 90 days or 162,000 people at one time. - nearly 30,000 different parts and supplies to support ship's operations, an inventory roughly equivalent in size to that of a large department store. - 40,000 gallons of distilled water per 24-hour period. This cruise was DURHAM's ninth and longest deployment. She is presently assigned to Amphibious Squadron Seven, and is home-ported in San Diego, California. +4 Departure San Diego, Ca. 20 June 1990 ln this breathless pause at the threshold of a long passage we seemed to be measuring our fitness for a long and arduous enterprise. FIRST LIEUTENANT I DURHAMIS Deck Department comprises 105 men in five divisionsl' First and Second Divisions, who are responsi- ble for the forward and after portions of the ship, respec- tively, had their work cut out for them throughout the deployment. When not standing bridge watches, they con- ducted countless underway replenishments, moved thou- sands of tons of cargo on and off the ship, raised and lowered hundreds of boats, and fought the never-ending war of preservation, working diligently to stay one step ahead of the destructive effects of wind and sea. Third Division, the Boat Group, ran a large-scale shuttle service between ships of the ARG throughout Desert Shield and Desert Storm. Even in port, the men and landing craft of Third Division were ready for any tasking, from supporting Marine Corps training exercises on the beach to conducting typhoon relief operations. Fourth Division, which owns and operates the ship's guns, was always right on target, whether breezing through live gunnery exercises, qualifying the crew on small arms, or conducting turkey shoots. Fifth Division is Deck Departmentis smallest division. As side cleaners, these sail- ors brought DURHAM her reputation as the best-looking ship in the ARG, while their upkeep and operation of the flight deck and equipment carried the ship through over 1100 helicopter operations with a perfect safety record. All underway replenishments, flight operations, boat and cargo-handling evolutions, and gun shoots require incredi- ble effort and teamwork from the entire Deck Department. The hard work and cooperation paid off - Deck Depart- ment delivered the goods time and time again, promptly, safely, and professionally. q V l f l ,, l 1.5 rN i'f l l I, lf: I l Wm it it Xl' li ff: ' X. The Enginemen and Machinist's Mates of A Division maintain and operate the ship's auxiliaries systems, which include: air conditioning and refrigeration plants, shipis service diesel generators, Deck Department's booms, eleva- tors, and cargo hatches, and the J P-5 refueling system, to name a few. B Division maintains and operates the ship's two 2900 gallon boilers, producing the 850 degree, 600 psi steam required to move DURHAM through the ocean and to keep her power plant running. E Division keeps the lights on and the telephones work- ing. They also maintain the general announcing system, the shipis gyro, and all electrical equipment. The Machinistis Mates of M Division use the steam generated by the boilers to run the main engine and the ship's service turbo-generators. They also operate the two distilling plants which produce 40,000 gallons of fresh water every day. R Division effects the shipis structural repairs and main- tains the fire-fighting and damage control equipment. They also run a machinery repair shop, which allows the ship to manufacture many of its own fittings and repair parts. LTJG MEIGHAN MAIN PROPULSION ASSISTANT fm WE 5- Ska 5. i. 'is .. DURHAM was asked to send Some of , her landing craft to assist in the relief ef fort. On November 25, 1990 four bgat crews and three LCM-6 boats embarked aboard the USS DULUTH CLPD-65 and rode down to Cebu to help. The crews arrived to find that the bridge connecting the city-island of Cebu with its neighboring bread-basket island of M tan had been wiped out during the storm DURHAM boats immediately went to work, carrying twenty-five SeaBees and ci- vilian electrical workers ashore. While these men worked restoring power in the city and countryside, DURHAM's sailors busied themselves shuttling food, water fuel, relief supplies, and DULUTH work- ing parties between the two islands. On December 9, DURHAM boats and crews returned to Subic Bay, having com- Q pleted a very successful international relief if. effort. The boat crews who participated were subsequently awarded the Humani- A tarian Service Medal. , I 4 I I . v- I 5. ,t CEBU HARBOR. NOTICE THE DAMAGED BRIDGE IN THE BACKGROUND. On August 2, 1990, Iraq's president Saddam Hus- sein took over Kuwait and, in the process, DUR- HAM's schedule. DURHAM and the rest of ARG Alfa CUSS OKINAWA, USS OGDEN, USS FORT MCHENRY, USS CAYUGAJ left Hong Kong on August 20, stopped in Subic Bay for an afternoon, and arrived in the Gulf of Oman on 6 September. For the next sixty days, DURHAM conducted long hours of boat and helicopter operations, seven days a week, shuttling men and supplies between the ever- growing number of amphibious ships in the area. On November 5 ARG Alfa departed the region, return- ing to Subic Bay two weeks later for some much needed rest and repairs. Originally, DURHAM was to have begun her tran- sit back to San Diego at this point. Instead, on 26 December she once again sailed for the Gulf to begin her role in Operation Desert Storm. DURHAM stopped briefly to spend the New Year in Singapore, then pressed on, passing through the Straits of Hor- muz and arriving in the Arabian Gulf on January 16, one day before the Gulf War began. A DURHAM was poised in the Arabian Gulf throughout Operation Desert Storm, part of an enor- mous amphibious force which kept over 80,000 Iraqi troops tied up in defensive positions along the Kuwaltl coast. As the war ended, DURHAM and the Othfif ships of ARG Alfa transited a 116-mile minefield to evacuate over 1400 enemy prisoners from Faylaka Island. Finally, on March 11, DURHAM dcpflfted the Arabian Gulf onher voyage home. The workin the Gulf was long, hot, and difficult for all hands. These pictures reflect only a fraction' of what went on over there, but the memories, stories, and letters home suffice to fill in the rest. I SEACS WERE A COMMON SIGHT DURING DESERT SHIELD AND RT STORM. DURHAM WAS PRE- PARED TO ACCOMMO- DATE ENEMY PRISON- ERS OF WAR DURING TI-IE EVACUATION OF FAYLAKA ISLAND. ...- ,W,,,.,,..f,.,.- ,,,, ., ,.-f,,..,-,,,,w,..,....Y- A-WMA 0- WW ..,,,wf..,..,,,..,,.. ,,,,.,,,, -.,,, , ,,,, ,,.,,,,,,,, ---f ,. ,.,.,,.,,...f..-rw, ,.., W. ,.,,,, .0 - ,....--.,.,,. , ,..,, f ,.....-A 1 , a ,q km, .,,,,,....,,.,.,- .,,,,,,-.,, ,W , ,f,..,..,,.,.f,,, .MM , Iii ...Hu ..,--M-- W.. ,M ,,,w,,.,..-.,,,,.,,,,.Q , , .,,,,,,,,,M.wff W ' -N,M,,,,,.,.,.-f- MMM ,,,.,,,f ....WM..- f- WW...-WfV,,,,,. .
