This cruise book is in part the story of a great ship whospent an eight month period of her life in the Western Pacific Ocean performing her mission in a proud and memorable manner. In larger part, however, it is the story of the men who manned her during this period of time. Look behind the pictures and you will see the efforts, the frustrations, the joys, the sorrows, and the successes and failures of the greatest group of men on earth, the Sailors and Marines of DURHAM. For without them She's nothing. As life is action and passion it is required of a man that he share the action and passion of his time for fear of being judged as never having lived at all. -Oliver Wendel Holmes The Younger
