To accomplish her mission, DURHAM has the most modern equipment available. Many new developments and concepts have been designed into her Deck and Engineering Departments that allow the ship to perform her mission more efficiently. For example, her expansive cargo holds have hydraulic hatch covers that open automatically in a matter of a few minutes. Most other cargo ships have hatch boards and beams which must be removed manually. Using a system of eight fifteen-ton booms, two forty-ton booms, and two seventy-ton booms all four hatches can be loaded or unloaded simultaneously and this can be done with about V2 to Va of the personnel required on other older cargo ships In addition there is a completely automated engineroom which can be operated by four men at one control con sole or remotely from the Bridge DURHAM s primary offensive weapon is her assault craft Cboatsl The importance and capabilities of these boats are as Iollows Four all aluminum LCM 8 CLand1ng Craft Mechanizedl which can carry a 60 ton tank or 150 combat troops Five LCM 6 boats which can carry 120 troops or 28 tons of material and equipment Two LCPL s fLand1ng Craft Personnel Lightj that are used as command and control boats for organiz ing and directing! leading the amphibious assault In total DURHAM s boats can transport over 1100 2 men or three-quarters of a million pounds C37 5 tonsl of material and equipment to the beach head simultaneously when fully loaded, and can repeat the round-trip evolution indefinitely, placing ap- proximately 26,000 men or 9,000 tons ashore in a dayis time C24 hoursl. DURHAM's facilities include: -completely air-conditioned living spaces. -a recreation room and a ship's library. -a bakery, soda fountain, laundry, dry-cleaning plant, hospital, barber shop, post office, and even a store, where everything from wrist watches and per- fume to razor blades may be purchased at sea. DURHAM could easily supply: -enough electricity for approximately 2,000 homes' requirements. -enough steam to supply over 35,000 homes with central heating enough supplies to feed 600 people three hearty meals per day for 90 days or 162 000 people at one time tif we could find a place big enough to cook and serve 1tJ 26 000 different items to support our or other ships operations which IS roughly equivalent to a large department store s capabilities to provide the needs of the public 40 000 gallons of drinking or nearly pure Cdistilledl water per twenty four hour period Commissioned 24 May 1969 USS DURHAM took her place in America s fighting force in the Pacific on 19 August 1969 when she reported to Commander Amphibious Force Pacific Fleet for duty October 1973 marked the end of her third Western Pacific deploy ment these pages reflect that period of time I , I C . . . 7 .- . . . 7 ' . . . . .
