Captain J. D. Tregurtha, Jr. Captain JamesD. Tregurtha, Jr. was born in Orange, New Jersey, on 19 January 1929. He attended Cornell University as a regular NROTC Midshipman, graduating in 1950 with a Bachelor of Science degree. Commissioned as Ensign on 12 June 1950, he served first on board USS WILTSIE CDD- 716J as ASW Officer and CIC Officer. After a brief tour on board USS HAMUL CAD-205, he reported to New London, Connecticut, in November of 1952 for submarine training. His subsequent duty assignments have included: Torpedo and Gunnery Officer, USS BECUNA QSS-3195, Operations and Warhead Officer, Guided Missle Unit 905 Operations Officer and Engineer Officer USS GRAYBACK QSSG-57475 Executive Officer, -USS RAZORBACK CSS-3947. n In December 1961 Captain Tregurtha assumed command of USS RASHER QAGSS- 2695. Subsequently, he served on the staff of COMSEVENTHFLT as Antisubmarine and Submarine Officer. During his tour he was awarded the Navy Commendation Medal. In April 1966, he reported to the Office of the Chief of Naval operations where he was awarded the Gold Star in lieu of a second award for meritorious achievement in conjunction with search operations for USS SCORPION. A 'f'. I I- ' Captain Tregurtha returned to sea duty in August 1968 as Chief Staff Officer, COMSUBFLOT EIGHT, thereafter, he served as COMSUBDIV 81. He then attended the U.S. Navy Postgraduate School, Monterey, where he received a Master of Science degree in Business Administration. In August 1971 he was assigned as Chief Staff Officer, COMSUBFLOT SEVEN. He was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal for meritorious achievement incident to planning submarine operationsfof great value tothe defense in- terests of the United States. I . I 11
